Museum of Life and Science

"Being sustainable is a big mission in my life. As a horticulturist, I lean more towards the natural side of being green - saving water, planting my own garden, picking up trash, being outdoors, and preserving my own food via canning. I love the whole idea of Victory Gardens and wish we all had the opportunity to be able to do that!"

I finally purchased a shampoo bar and a bar soap. I am not totally loving the feeling of the soaps on my skin - it doesn't make my skin feel smooth in shower. Does anyone has a favorite place to shop for shampoo bars? I was surprised that Whole Foods only had a few choices. What is your favorite body bar? I work inside/outside in a greenhouse environment, so I like the feeling of being super clean!

    Study Follow the Chasing Arrows
Recycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?

Working at a Museum, it kind of makes it my duty to show people how to change. We have the opportunity to be able to show visitors how and why about recycling and sustainability. It would help to spread the information out.

How do you handle bulk purchasing and breaking items down into smaller portions - i.e. meats? I try to buy in bulk and use my food saver to freeze in portions. Is there an alternative out there besides the old school freezer paper wraps? I really like how the food saver sucks out all the air.

I found this article about freezing meat without plastic: https://www.sustainablejungle.com/zero-waste/freeze-meat-without-plastic/
but I don't know how effective their suggestions would be... If you try one please update us!

For the sustainable fashion action, I felt like I already do a lot to prevent fashion waste. I shop for a lot of my and my family's clothes at second hand sales and thrift stores (mostly my clothes and my son's). I took the sustainable fashion quiz and got Legend! I was pretty low on the "waste" scale since I do a lot of thrift shopping already. We do have a lot of great, local thrift stores in the area.

Emma, that sounds like a great idea. I wish we had a bit more space for the "Free Table" to be able to do something like that. An alternative would be do donate items when AAZK does their yard sale at the Picnic Dome then shop at it! All goes to a good cause!

I like to purchase items without a lot of mixed colors or patterns. This allows me to mix and match my wardrobe and incorporate jewelry. I buy most of my clothes and jewelry from thrift and antique stores - I like the hunt of a good find!

I do the opposite with the same result lol - almost all of my clothing is brightly colored and patterned, so it all matches the muppet vibe I've got going on.

    Family + Pets Balloons Blow
Had you ever considered the environmental impact of balloons before? How can you share this information with your friends and family to encourage them to avoid balloons, too?

    Bobbi Jo Holmes's avatar
Bobbi Jo Holmes 7/18/2023 9:02 AM
I know balloons are not good for the environment and wildlife. I always carry extra trash bags with me when I am at the beach because there is always trash and balloons. I will share information with my family and friends about the dangers of balloons to make them aware of their hazards.
  • REFLECTION QUESTION
    Study Numbers Everywhere
Were you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?

    Bobbi Jo Holmes's avatar
Bobbi Jo Holmes 7/16/2023 8:26 PM
I knew the numbers meant different things, and that our own recycling company only takes certain numbers. I will continue to educate others about proper plastic recycling to help improve the world.

Last week I purchased a box of the plastic free laundry detergent sheets to see how they work. I haven't used them on all my laundry (like towels) yet, but they seem to be working great. Participating in this challenge helps you realize (even the seasoned Green people) what you can do to change even by taking baby steps. :)

I am at Scout Camp and it’s discouraging to use disposable materials. They have the masses come through weekly, over 1000 this week, and feeding them is top priority. We’ve had multi-pack plastic ware and styrofoam trays.

    Kitchen Swap the Snacks
How does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?

    Bobbi Jo Holmes's avatar
Bobbi Jo Holmes 7/10/2023 8:28 AM
Fresh fruit/veggie options for snacks are much healthier and cheaper to offer than prepackaged snacks. Sometimes we get caught up in the convenience of prepackaged items and forget how incredibly wasteful they can be. (But sometimes this Momma would rather grab her Nature Bakery Fig Bar for snack instead of staying up late making them from scratch! :) )
