    Personal Care See the Green
Take a moment to estimate how many disposable daily contacts you may have used over the years. What would be your impact now of switching to a contact brand with a longer lifespan?

This is amazing! I didn't know I could recycle my contact lenses and those pesky little containers they come in. There's not a plastic-free option for us who have to wear contacts, so this is a great option.

What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

I discontinued buying and using TJ's conditioner that comes in a plastic tube that is not recyclable. I also purchased soap that has no packaging at all! I will start purchasing bar shampoo and look for conditioner that is bar or is in a recyclable container.

Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

I found this extremely difficult. Everything from vegetables to meat trays have some sort of plastic waste. Does anyone have any tips?
  • Reflection Question
    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

I always shy away from wrapped vegetables, but I'm noticing all the small pieces of plastic we still use on fresh fruit and vegetables (e.g. fruit stickers, rubber bands, ties, etc.). For instance, why does every banana need a sticker?

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

I just used the Plastic Calculator on rePurpose.global. I waste 191 lbs. of plastic every year :). I'm hoping Plastic Free July helps me develop better long-term habits.

  • As Sustainability Coordinator, I hope to be a resource for those trying to reduce their plastic usage and consumption
