  • Reflection Question
    Lifestyle Travel Smart
How can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?

I was successful when getting ready to travel by stopping by Homegoods and picking up even more reusable plastic bags. Since I’ll be traveling with my sister we both spoke about limiting/eliminating our plastic bag use and she even got me a Disney reusable straw and cutlery set to use!
  • Reflection Question

Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

Just finished packing today and I feel so proud that my carry-on is filled with snacks/food in reusable containers. Now while traveling I will be able to avoid the single use items at the airport. Also made it a point to pack my Yeti coffee mug and water bottle so I can keep being eco friendly. This has made my travel experience more enjoyable because I know how eco friendly I am being.

    Lifestyle Homemade Cleaners
What did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?

Ran out of windex today while cleaning my house so I turned to goggle to find a eco friendly alternative. Best part was I already had the ingredients to make the new vinegar cleaner so it saved me a trip to the store!!

A Plastic Ocean on Netflix is a must watch. Learning more about the startling amount of waste in the ocean is always terrifying.

July might be ending and with that our EcoChallenge ends, but I know I’ll keep finding ways to eliminate single use plastics from my life.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Use Reusable Water Bottles
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?

    Nicolette Aquilino 7/31/2021 7:53 PM
Advocating for those harmed by bottling of water is very important. Just like with everything else knowledge is power. Sharing what I’ve learned with others is important because I bet most people don’t know much about this process. Additionally making sure I use a reusable water bottle and advocating for water bottle refill fountains is a great thing I can do to help the environment.
  • Reflection Question
Food Cook a Zero-Plastic Waste Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

I’m proud to say that a majority of my pantry does not include single use plastic! Some great alternatives to the single use plastics in my kitchen would be to buy in bulk from stores that allow you fill your own containers. Reusing mason jars is a great sustainable way to change over my kitchen and they are super cheap too!
  • Reflection Question
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

Knowledge is power. Educating people on how harmful to the environment single use plastic ares is a small step with a huge impact.

Last day of the plastic free EcoChallenge!!!  Sad that July is over already. Thanks so much Liz for including AAQ in another amazing conservation effort.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Use Reusables at Work
It is often true that we only have control over our own actions and not the collective community. How can you lead by example when it comes to switching disposables for reusable dishes in your community?

    Nicolette Aquilino's avatar
    Nicolette Aquilino 7/30/2021 7:07 PM
I can be a example by making sure that I am always bringing my reusable containers to work. Complimenting people when they bring in reusable containers is helpful because it shows you noticed. Knowing how easy it is to use reusable containers at work has given me the idea to purchase containers for people as gifts throughout the year.
