Stop the sale of Polystyrene Foam Coolers

July Victory on stopping Foam Coolers for sale - Grocery Outlet in Los Osos, CA July 1 - I signed up for Plastic Free July Ecochallenge and created a team https://plasticfree.ecochallenge.org/dashboards#_= and supposed to report what I'm doing as a "team leader". Finally, today (July 10) am catching up. This afternoon I was in Los Osos for my friend Josh's Open House . On my way home, stopped in at one of my favorite stores - Grocery Outlet to pick up a store special "Organic Walnuts". At the store entrance, shoppers are greeted with a row of polystyrene foam coolers, and on three different isles were more foam coolers. So you can imagine my next steps beside snapping a couple photos.... At the end of my walnut purchase, I asked the clerk if she could call the manager; so she used the magic button to get the Manager to come to Checkstand #1. A few minutes later, Manager Michelle arrived. By then, I had the IWMA Polystyrene Ordinance on my cell phone, and explained what I wanted. Today was one of the sweetest moments of my activist life. Manager Michelle listened, then said something like, 'Thank you for letting me know as we don't want to sell anything that isn't legal'. She walked off to get a cart, and I left the store. I decided to turn back to see what she was doing with the cart. Michelle was loading the FOAM COOLERS into the cart!! I asked her if I could take a photo, and she said, "sure as long as it is only my arm". Now SLO County people, let's demand SLO County businesses and all restaurants do right by the environment, and apply the Polystyrene Ordinance 2019-1. SLO IWMA (Integrated Waste Management Authority) passed this ordinance October 9, 2019; postponed for a year, due to Covid. Due to our activism, the Ordinance re-passed this year - April 14, 2021 (although is not currently being enforced for penalties- don't tell anyone). See attached. (IWMA Board members tried unsuccessfully to repeal Ord 2019-1 in April). Download the Ordinance Flyer to your cell phone, and show everyone who may be abusing the use of horrible polystyrene foam. Imagine - right under the foam coolers: "natural, organic, specialty, healthy". GO OUT THERE - CHANGE the WORLD!

Prevent Recycling Contamination

Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 15 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.

Say No to Styrofoam

Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
