  • Reflection Question
Personal Care Pretty oh so Pretty
How can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?

    Sydney Bayne's avatar
    Sydney Bayne 7/31/2021 8:41 PM
I can describe to them how reducing packaging will decrease both waste in landfills and emissions from manufacturing.  I can also provide examples of how I have made switches to sustainable packaging.
  • Reflection Question
Community Tour A Waste Management Facility
Landfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?

    Sydney Bayne's avatar
    Sydney Bayne 7/14/2021 8:48 PM
I learned about how leachate from landfills can severely harm soils and waterways.  I also learned how the effects of leachate demonstrate the importance of properly disposing of hazardous wastes.
  • Reflection Question
Food Say No to Plastic Bags
How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

    Sydney Bayne 7/10/2021 8:33 PM
This challenge is easy if you have access to reusable bags, which are relatively easy to find in stores or online.  By keeping reusable shopping bags in your car, you’ll always be able to access them when shopping.
  • Reflection Question
    Personal Care Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Sydney Bayne's avatar
    Sydney Bayne 7/09/2021 8:59 PM
You can express your personality, creativity, and values in the ways that you live and interact with others every day.  There is no need for your self-image and character to be defined by material items such as clothing or accessories.  By simply being yourself, you can express your personality better than any clothing items or accessories can!
  • Reflection Question
    Family Swap the Snacks
How does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?

    Sydney Bayne's avatar
    Sydney Bayne 7/06/2021 8:30 PM
Because fresh fruits and veggies provide essential vitamins and minerals, swapping them in place of prepackaged (and often heavily processed) snacks not only reduces your plastic consumption, but benefits your health as well!
  • Reflection Question
Community Learn about the Harms of Plastic Production
What did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?

    Sydney Bayne's avatar

Something interesting that I learned about plastic production and plastic waste is that debris floating in the water can actually spread invasive species around the world’s oceans.  While floating nearshore, local marine species such as barnacles and mussels can settle on plastic litter.  The buoyancy of these plastics can cause them to be transported and reach new shores, and the marine organisms settled on the debris are transported as well.  This causes species native to one region to spread to nonnative habitats, potentially contributing to the spread of invasive species.  Although there are many other impacts of plastic production and plastic waste, I found this impact interesting because it’s not one that immediately comes to mind.  It made me consider how numerous and varied the negative effects of plastics are.
  • Reflection Question
Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutral
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

    Sydney Bayne's avatar
    Sydney Bayne 7/02/2021 2:56 PM
I found out that, although my plastic consumption was less than the plastic consumption of the average American, my plastic usage was still large.  The portion of the results where it described the time at which there could be more plastic in the ocean than fish based on my plastic consumption was very surprising because the date was within the next few decades.  This shows that although you may have already made plastic-free swaps in your life, there is always more that you can do to reduce your plastic consumption.
