Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

I purchased a preferred toothpaste I'm excited to try out out. Why does it need to be a paste? What do we gain from that? Toothpaste tubes are impossible to empty and impossible to recycle. By supporting companies like Battle Green we send a message that this is the type of products we want.

Even better, I can get a refill of tooth powder in a compostable envelope when I reorder!

This challenge has really taught me a lot about analyzing my daily choices and seeing what they add up to. It's important to keep in mind that not everyone is perfect, and just because there's nothing sustainable to eat doesn't mean I shouldn't eat. Every small improvement moves us in the right direction.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

What concerns me most is how many people believe that there is no climate crisis and their actions are perfect, or that there's nothing they can do because everyone else is the problem.
People in the US need to see that they can make a change at a much higher level than just the consumer. When you only try to change yourself of course you will have little action. It's time for advocacy. Changing in one of the most influential countries in the world will impact the entire globe in just a few years.
  • Reflection Question
Personal Care Back in the Bowl
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

Whenever you buy something you support a company and embrace their choices. I'm starting to look more at what that actually means. Every time you buy from an eco friendly company instead of a mainstream company you not only send your money in their support but also send a message that you support what they are doing as a whole, instead of saying the same thing to an unconscious company

How can you advocate for the importance of reducing packaging to the rest of your friends, family and larger community?

Why does your soap need to be liquid? What do you gain from the plastic bottle? Do you know what we all lose from the plastic bottle??
Also saves the manufacturer money. We pay so much on components for our liquid soaps, I'm glad our next has such little packaging with it

The State of Maine passed a law in 2019 banning all single use plastic bags, that finally went into effect July 2021. People appear to be coping and adapting. Maine also just passed a law  requiring companies that create consumer packaging to pay for the costs of recycling. The hope is there that manufacturers will take action to reduce their packaging. If you can find allies in the state legislature of your own state to also create laws like this it could help create incentives for less packaging.

What did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?

It's important to recognize how privileged I am. I can drink the water that comes out of my sink. I have multiple affordable grocery stores in my area with organic options. My air is clean and safe to breathe at any time of day. I feel sick to my stomach to think about how rare that is, even in America. What am I doing to contribute to this environmental inequality? I need to learn a lot more about what I can do in my area and around the country

What are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?

It's difficult to manage a dish situation: dishes go home with employees and never come back, dishes get left dirty in the sink, who is financially responsible? It's great we don't offer any reusables, but we put some reusable dishes in our office for our team. The smaller group is more reliable with it, but I did take like all the forks home :( brought them back though

Signed a pretty cool petition today, not quite plastic related but still an important cause, asking them not to turn a Tacoma wetlands area into a soccer field
