    Lifestyle Watch a Documentary
Which documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?

I watched Plastic Oceans, PBS documentary on plastic, and the short of Story of Plastic.  I viscerally felt the plastic crisis and its impact on our world. I learned about the amazing organization Plastic Bank.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

I watched a PBS documentary that highlighted Unboxed grocery store in Seattle.  Seemed so cool!  I wish that there were financial incentives for grocery stores like that around the US. In San Francisco, I only know of one option that has some refillable options.  Most grocery stores -- plastic plastic plastic!

It seems like it would be a no-brainer to switch to unboxed!! Incentives are a great idea; I wonder if we can write to our local reps about that ;)

    Community Host a Watch Party

Having shared goals is a great way to build relationships and inspire each other to take more action! Being able to talk through a plastic documentary helps make it easier to remember learnings. In the future, you have someone you can make references to.

Oof. Finally watched a Plastic Ocean last night. They did a fantastic job making the plastic problem so clear while also highlighting areas of hope. I definitely was sad, but I was also inspired to work even harder to fight plastic pollution and the accelerating climate crisis.

In what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?

Well, before I started @VotesForThePlanet on instagram I was only able to reach/influence a handful of friends and colleagues. Now I'm able to share material encouraging climate / plastic action to ~10,000 accounts each month : O   That also motivates me to be more creative in how I share my values and values of my team.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

I've read that plastic can help extend the shelf life of some produce. That helps the grocery store, producer, and consumer. Ugh life is never easy.  Food waste is bad. Single-use plastic is bad.  I try to do my part by not buying any produce that's in plastic.

      We completely get the frustration!

We struggle when the decision is to buy non-organic that's not wrapped in plastic or organic that IS wrapped in plastic.  We wish there was one decision that was the "right" one.  So frustrating!  In the past, we've mostly grown our own produce, but with moving onto the boat, we are a little stressed figuring out the best system for decisions like that.  So far, farmer's markets seem the best answer! When we can't go to a market, we do what you do and try our best to not buy produce in plastic.  We have started contacting grocery stores to encourage them to stop purchasing produce in plastic.

I was talking with my best friend and he was talking about how frustrating it was that so many groceries have plastic at Whole Foods and Trader Joe's. I did some research and realized that Whole Foods used to be an industry leader in sustainability and fighting plastic pollution, but... has fallen behind on leadership in the plastic arena. So, I signed a petition asking for them to step up again. I also emailed Trader Joe's thanking them for steps they've taken and asking them to make a larger commitment to fighting plastic pollution this month in honor of Plastic Free July
