Maureen's Actions
Food
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Personal Care
Pretty oh so Pretty
I will purchase beauty products that are packaged in sustainable packaging.
Food
Use a Reusable Mug / Collapsible Cup
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own collapsible cup.
Food
Buy Unpackaged Produce
I will purchase produce items without plastic packaging, making sure to wash them well before using them.
Food
Skip the Straw
I will keep 1 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors. Why not try using hair conditioner instead of shaving foam for that baby smooth feel?
Personal Care
Lather Up
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, and conditioners with either a bar or refillable option.

Maureen C. 7/29/2020 9:36 AMSpeaking of NON-plastic everyday essentials: did you catch these great finds on The Today Show? https://www.today.com/shop/plastic-free-july-t187897 -
Maureen C. 7/29/2020 9:33 AMI collect unusual mugs and antique glasses. Need I add that my tea, fresh water or juice taste so much better in good china or glass than in plastic? LOL

Maureen C. 7/29/2020 9:27 AMI'm up to HERE in voter registration activities--by which I mean I feel guilty for not checking in more!--but the beauty of the Ecochallenge is, it makes anti-plastics a mindset and a habit! Wherever I am, whatever I'm doing, I'm vigilant about avoiding plastics, a challenge we can meet and win! -
Maureen C. 7/29/2020 9:22 AMProb'ly can't do this every day--but yesterday, I only at finger food! Fresh fruit and veggies, pita sandwiches, popcorn. Fun, healthy, plastics-free! -
Maureen C. 7/13/2020 7:15 PMeasy to say, "Thanks, I don't need a bag" at checkout at those times when you pick up barely an armful. Where I live, grocery shoppers who bring their own bags have to pack them themselves. Since joining the Challenge, it's occurred to me that I could do that and live to tell about it.-
Jennifer Richardson 7/15/2020 1:34 PMHi Alison,
Maureen can chime in as well, but I know that the Kroger near my house will allow me to use my own bags, but I have to bag my own groceries and I also keep the bags in my cart. -
Alison Edwards 7/14/2020 7:32 AMMaureen, could you please share what store is allowing customers to bring their own bags? Before Covid I was really good about always carrying my own re-usable cloth bags. I have been so frustrated that most stores around me aren't allowing customers to bring bags right now. Some are still accepting bags to be recycled but I would rather use my own bags and put them through the washer if I get worried that they're germy after going to the grocery.

Maureen C. 7/11/2020 10:29 AMNobody said this would be easy, right? The list of where plastic is NOT is distressingly short. Still, we persist! -
Maureen C. 7/09/2020 7:40 PMI chose to join this Challenge out of a dawning awareness of human abuse of our small, fragile planet. Those reports of a floating island of trash the size of TEXAS in the Pacific moved me, as did the photos of wild birds struggling in the stranglehold of plastic loops made to hold six-packs of canned soda. -
Maureen C. 7/09/2020 7:29 PMy.Finding kmyself increasingly aware (and appalled!) by the unbelievable amounts of plastic in every facet of our lives! Had a checkup with my doc (flying colors) and lost count of the volume and variety of plastics in one exam room! Anyone else tried glancing at your surroundings, taking silent inventory of the plastics? Seems to me, manufacturers of plastic should be leveraged to re-focus their vast businesses on a sustainable, high demand commodity. -
Maureen C. 7/09/2020 7:16 PMToday, it's all about fresh fruit--craving!--juicy oranges, crisp apples, watermelon and grapes. Thank goodness for the produce department, colorful refuge from ubiquitous plastic. -
Maureen C. 7/08/2020 11:37 PMDoes it count to recycle plastic grocery bags for disposing of used kitty litter? Probably better not to acquire plastic bags in the first place, and use those unbiquitous cloth grocery bags. But then I won't have anything to sift soiled litter into!-
joy kotheimer 7/12/2020 3:30 PMGood to repurpose for more than one use! I know they do make compostable poop bags (I use Earth Rated lavender scented ones for my dogs because it’s lovely if you’re going to be carrying around 💩). But I do make a second use of whatever bags we can’t recycle for our cat litter too- like old granola or coffee bags) -
Alison Edwards 7/10/2020 7:38 AMI have a similar struggle when it comes to having poop bags to carry with me when out on dog walks. We use a pooper scooper when we are home but you need something for when you aren't in your own yard!
