Joanna's actions
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 15 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 30 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Kitchen
Glass Bottle Baby
I will replace 1 plastic bottles with glass or stainless steel alternatives.
Kitchen
Beautifying the World
I will grow flowers from seeds that I harvest from my own flower garden and share the plants and seeds with others. In this way I avoid buying plants in plastic pots at the store and I share a gift with friends that they can enjoy in their own gardens!
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Community
Write Publix Corporate Office
I will write the Publix corporate office to request that they please look into carrying compostable garbage bags alongside their regular plastic bags at their stores. This will allow consumers to have a biodegradable choice in the type of garbage bags they purchase and use.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 15 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 2 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Community
Advocate for Plastic-Free Dining
I will talk to the owner or manager of a restaurant I frequent to request that they reduce their use of single-use and disposable plastics.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 60 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Study
Picking Up Trash
I will spend at least 10 minutes picking up trash at the locations where I feed my feral kitties, especially trash that I see is recyclable like plastic bottles or aluminum cans. I see way too much trash every day when I feed them and it's something small I can do to help the environment and make it more beautiful for all of us.
Community
Days for Girls @ the Zoo
Come by the Santa Fe College Teaching Zoo on Saturday, July 8, 10 am - 1 pm and chat with volunteers from Days for Girls. They will be giving out FREE reusable washable pads (for menstruation and incontinence) and beds for companion animals made by volunteers at the North Florida Sewing Center.
Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Community
Give Some Green Gratitude
I will give a shout-out on social media to a local company, coworker, friend or family member for their plastic free or green efforts.
Community
Support a Sharing Economy
I will create or support a sharing economy with family, friends, and neighbors.
Family + Pets
Rubber Glove Pet Hair Removal
I will use a rubber glove to remove pet hair from clothes, carpets and furniture.
Bathroom
Dry naturally
I will allow my hair to dry naturally rather than use the blow dryer. This will conserve energy in our home which is a big deal where we live.
Bathroom
Short showers
I will take showers that are 5 min or less in order to conserve on water.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 1 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Gorillas on the Line
Donate old handheld electronics for recycling at the zoo's ticket window. Items will be sent to Eco-Cell and funds raised from recycling are donated to support wild gorillas.
Participant Feed
Reflection, encouragement, and relationship building are all important aspects of getting a new habit to stick.
Share thoughts, encourage others, and reinforce positive new habits on the Feed.
To get started, share “your why.” Why did you join the challenge and choose the actions you did?

Joanna Caputa 7/31/2023 5:40 PMDoes anyone know if the City of Gainesville or the Alachua County Commission recognizes the month of July as Plastic Free July? That might be something for our Santa Fe Teaching Zoo Zero Wasters to look into for next year. They do this at the very beginning of their commission meetings.-
Julie McGrath 7/31/2023 7:26 PMThat is a great idea! I would like to see the college get behind this as well, as a bigger initiative and supporter. Maybe even donate a few promotional items as additional prizes. I wish we could see more participation from employees!

Joanna Caputa 7/31/2023 5:27 PMAlachua County residents can get a free wire roll for compost collection at the Public Works office. Here is the link for the information. https://alachuacounty.us/Depts/SolidWaste/Residential/Pages/Composting.aspx -
Joanna Caputa 7/31/2023 5:21 PMThis has been a great eco challenge year. Besides the learning, I've started a garden and am looking forward to harvesting baby loofahs and peppers to eat. I'm also eager to bring my extra seeds to the library to use in their seed bank. -
Joanna Caputa 7/30/2023 5:39 PMToday I calculated my ecological footprint and was very sad. It's difficult when you live with others that are not completely on board with the changes you want to make.-
Julie McGrath 7/30/2023 7:05 PMI agree. I checked mine the other day, and when you think you are making strides of a difference, it is disappointing when the report tells you your footprint is significantly higher than you imagined! Still though, just being conscious of our efforts, every little bit helps!

Joanna Caputa 7/29/2023 8:04 PMI just found a great article about biodegradable vs compostable doggie pooh bags! There are some worth buying!

Andrea Robinson 7/29/2023 9:05 PMThank you! It's always a challenge to find truly biodegradable products. :)

Joanna Caputa 7/29/2023 7:46 PMWhile pet sitting for a friend I was walking her dog and noticed that the poop bags were not biodegradable. The bags were at a "poop station" in an upscale neighborhood on the west side of town. The idea of having public "poop stations" use biodegradable bags for dog pooh might actually help educate the users about the importance of using biodegradable bags of their own. I was walking dogs for two different people this week and neither owner had biodegradable bags to use. I'm not sure who to contact in the neighborhood about this but I plan on looking into it. -
Joanna Caputa 7/28/2023 5:28 PMAnother great thing happened this evening! I had the opportunity to speak with an assistant manager at Publix in Jonesville about the possibility of their adding biodegradable plastic garbage bags to their stock AND to replace the current single use plastic bags they have in the produce and bulk food section with biodegradable bags! He was very receptive and even allowed me to explain the difference between compostable and biodegradable. He already knew about the problem of plastic in landfills, which really helped. I feel like I've learned so much this year that I can now carry on an intelligent conversation with others to teach them. Thank you for doing this every year!-
Julie McGrath 7/28/2023 6:19 PMThat is great! It can be hard to get the nerve to approach and talk to a manager like that. I applaud you for taking such an awesome action! We can be hopeful that the managers will talk to each other and can influence action, and that others will talk to managers at other stores to support and create a movement!

Joanna Caputa 7/28/2023 1:57 PMI was taking a look around this website on the people tab. I can't believe there are more people participating in the eco challenge in Florida than in California! We have 17 pages worth of participants! Why is it that some states have so few people doing this? How does one enlist people in other areas to do this? I don't ever hear about the eco challenge until it is actually upon us and teams have been formed. -
Joanna Caputa 7/28/2023 1:47 PMToday I was at one of UF's clinics and noticed there was a coffee service for patients. I mentioned to the staff member who checked me in that it was too bad that paper coffee cups weren't offered because it takes hundreds of years for styrofoam to degrade in a landfill. He said "that's a really great idea". So, I asked him who I should talk with to have the idea passed along where it can be seriously discussed. He said, "Me. I'm the supervisor here"! I was so happy! He knew exactly what I was talking about and totally agreed and is in a position to make a change! I can't wait to see if there are paper coffee cups the next time I return!-
Julie McGrath 7/28/2023 6:21 PMGreat job! It sounds like you were on a roll today!

Joanna Caputa 7/27/2023 5:34 PMI love the fact that Publix has bulk bins for certain items. It would be great if they carried biodegradable bags in which to put things. It would also be great if they carried reusable vegetable fruit and vegetable bags in the produce area. Like the ones carried by Life Unplastic. Guess I'll have mention this to the produce manager.

Julie McGrath 7/27/2023 7:00 PMI agree, I wish there more more sustainable options available. We can ask for paper bags when getting groceries if we forget our reusable ones, but I still wonder how earth friendly that is too? We can also reuse our plastic produce bags if we end up using some from the store.
