I do not have a green thumb. The lettuce I planted at the beginning of the challenge has sprouted, but does not seem to be getting any larger. I am supposed to be able to eat my lettuce after 42 days. I don't think that will be happening. This is why I have a hard time growing my own food. I cannot seem to get it to mature.

There are PVC pipes that were needing to be re-purposed at work so we are using them to make a recirculating splash toy to use for an upcoming water themed event.

    Pets Pet Waste
By composting your pet waste, you are turning waste into nutrients to feed the soil. In what other ways can you turn waste into a resource in your life?

    Andrea Contreras 7/21/2019 12:18 PM
Things like toilet paper tubes, cardboard boxes, and other plant based products have become pet toys/ hiding places for our gerbils which has cut down on the amount of toys I have to buy.

Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

    Andrea Contreras 7/21/2019 10:51 AM
I have been searching in the grocery stores for alternatives packaging for toothpaste, including within more natural and eco conscious retailers,  and I cannot find options. It is quite frustrating to have to purchase online because I like to look at products with my hands. I've expressed my concerns with management who seem indifferent to help.

I clicked one of my one time challenges, even though I have not had the opportunity to do it yet. I have no plans to travel during this challenge, but I have committed to bringing my own toiletries when I do go. Some of these challenges are things that you most likely will not do every single day. I hope that going forward these challenges are evaluated and more appropriately listed for completion.

Community Estimate Your Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutral
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

    Andrea Contreras 7/21/2019 10:44 AM
The Plastic calculator estimated that my plastic consumption was 55% higher than the average American. I feel like the the algorithm it uses to figure out these percentages is a little off. I know there are definite areas where I can still improve, I'm not perfect, but I do not think that my plastic consumption is higher than the average american; rather, I use less plastic than the average American.

What is a plastic-related issue in your state/province?

    Andrea Contreras 7/21/2019 10:26 AM
Years ago plastic bag bans and proposals for bag bans  began popping up in cities around the State. Very quickly, the State passed a law making banning plastic bags illegal. There is a ban on banning plastic bags. I was so disappointed in our State. This restriction is still in effect.

  • Andrea Contreras 7/21/2019 10:22 AM
I'm feeling quite frustrated because family and those closest to me, the people who I think would be the most supportive and interested in what I have to say about reducing plastic, are the people that I have the hardest time inspiring. I visited with relatives yesterday and even though I've informed them frequently about plastic water bottles, everyone had a bottle except for me. I appreciate this challenge as it shows me the number of people that do care to reduce plastics. Thank you all!

I'm still nervous about using my safety razor to shave, but I have not had any accidents, so yay.
