It's already the last day of Plastic Free July! I didn't make any life-changing discoveries this year, but it was still a good reminder of what I already do to reduce plastic use and how I can continue to improve.

I can't believe tomorrow is already the end of the month! It went by so quickly this year!

What are the most pressing environmental justice concerns in your city, town, or region? Were you aware of or affected by these local concerns before you did your research?

According to the EJScreen map, Dallas struggles with everything from lead paint to wastewater to traffic. I'm not surprised. This is a huge metropolis. Of course the environment's going to be bad here.

Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?

The YouTube video "The Story of Bottled Water" by "The Story of Stuff" is a great source of information. Their link to their sources doesn't work, though. Even if not everything they say is true, enough is obviously true enough to be believable. By now I'm sure everyone's heard of Nestle's bottling fiasco in California. As long as we keep emphasizing the bad press and insisting on reusable bottles and drinking tap water or getting our own purifiers for it, we're on the right track.

Do some research on polystyrene and polyvinyl. How many items in your house already contain these toxins?

Styrofoam is a trademarked name of polystyrene, so now I know it's everywhere. According to chemicalsafetyfacts.org polystyrene is used to "make appliances, electronics, automobile parts, toys, gardening pots and equipment and more". Polyvinyl includes PVC, which everyone knows is used in all sorts of plumbing. Polyvinyl is also used in some clothing. Going back to chemicalsafetyfacts.org: "Economical, versatile polyvinyl chloride (PVC, or vinyl) is used in a variety of applications in the building and construction, health care, electronics, automobile and other sectors, in products ranging from piping and siding, blood bags and tubing, to wire and cable insulation, windshield system components and more." It seems like everything I've ever owned is made of polystyrene or polyvinyl!

I didn't end up travelling this month, but I did do some pet-sitting over a couple of my weekends. I brought leftovers from home in reusable tupperware, used the homeowner's utensils, filled reusable containers with shampoos and soaps to use, etc.

It's an easy way to get word out to a lot of people at once. Sometimes it's people who know you personally and genuinely want to know what you're up to and what you believe, and other times it's people who share interests with you. Either way, at least a few of them will likely have their interest piqued by a post about reducing plastic.

Plastic is everywhere, yet it's so difficult to clean up. It breaks up and disperses and hides. There's so much of it that just thinking about trying to get it all is overwhelming. Every new idea has seemingly insurmountable flaws. So many people have been trying for so long and we've only just made a dent. And we keep making more plastic. As long as disposable plastics are so common it's impossible to truly make an impact in cleaning it up.

I went to a restaurant to eat with friends on Sunday. They got there before me and got a table. Before I even got there the waitress had given me a straw. When she brought refills I learned she put the straws in before even approaching the table.
