    Lifestyle Homemade Cleaners
What did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?

    Nicole Davis 7/31/2019 11:54 AM
The ingredients I have came in plastic bottles still, but at least buying in bulk like this means fewer smaller bottles are being used. If only glass bottles were less expensive.

I can't believe it's already the end of the month! It's so neat to watch everyone's contributions add up. Can't wait to see the final tallies!

So travelling plastic free is a huge challenge. Someday I'll get the waitress to hear 'no straw instead of 'straw please'...

  • Nicole Davis 7/25/2019 12:35 PM
It's packing day! I have my bars of shampoo, conditioner, and body soap in a reusable bag, I've refilled my mouthwash container, I've packed my bamboo utensils and metal straw, and I'm ready to go!

  • Nicole Davis 7/23/2019 3:38 PM
I wonder if I could convince my parents to change their drawer full of plastic bags into a second drawer for tupperware.... That's probably still a long way out, though.

  • Nicole Davis 7/22/2019 11:26 AM
I'm travelling in a few days, so I have an important question: Are metal straws allowed on airplanes? I'm only taking a carry-on.

    Lifestyle Watch a Documentary
Which documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?

    Nicole Davis 7/17/2019 3:04 PM
I didn't actually watch a full documentary. I don't want to pay $20 when the trailers get the point across just fine. Seeing the clothing factories and their workers' conditions in "The True Cost" was horrifying. Such a far cry from the shiny, clean stores we have here in America. It's a good thing I'm already in the habit of shopping at thrift stores!

Community Estimate Your Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutral
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

    Nicole Davis 7/14/2019 11:23 AM
It's hard to tell how much of the plastic consumption calculated is actually me. I live in a middle class home where most of the furnishings, groceries, etc are bought by my parents. If I lived alone it would be much easier to keep track of how much plastic packaging comes home with me. The number rePurpose estimated didn't really surprise me, since my home is still filled with foods and cleaning supplies wrapped in plastic. I was surprised to hear that what I recycle at home is often dumped in landfills anyways. I really hope that's not true, but I have an unfortunate feeling that it is.

I'm going to the movies tonight! It's an eat-while-you-watch place, so I get another chance to ask the waiter for no straw before they give it to me.

  • Nicole Davis 7/06/2019 11:42 AM
Took my bamboo silverware to my family's 4th of July party on Thursday! It made it easier to bring up alternatives to plastic silverware, but no one seemed interested. :(
