Esther's Actions
Food
Use a Reusable Mug / Collapsible Cup
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own collapsible cup.
Food
Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 20 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Community
Learn about Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 30 minutes learning about how plastic pollution affects members of my own community and how organizations in my community are working for change.
Personal Care
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors. Why not try using hair conditioner instead of shaving foam for that baby smooth feel?
Community
Raise Money For a Nonprofit
I will raise money to support a nonprofit dedicated to plastic pollution reduction.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA approved reusable quart sized bag.
Lifestyle
Watch a Documentary
I will watch a documentary film about waste with family and friends and talk about what we learned.
Lifestyle
Reusable Face Coverings
Disposable masks are made of mixed materials and not recyclable. When possible, I will reduce my waste while protecting myself and others by wearing a reusable face covering when in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Food
Skip the Straw
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own glass/metal straw.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutral
I will visit rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant a herb or vegetable garden in my home, workplace, dorm room, or community garden.
Food
Use Reusable Containers
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).

Conservation Oakland Zoo 7/28/2020 5:05 PMHi Ester,
Thank you for all of the plastic free actions you are taking!!! I love getting crafty with my plastic containers when I am done using them for food, before they go to the recycling. Glass and metals are always a great way to go for reusable. Personally, I have been saving up for a Planet Box lunch box ( https://www.planetbox.com/).

Reflection QuestionFood Use a Reusable Mug / Collapsible CupSince the restrictions that COVID-19 has required of our society, trying to use your own cup might present new barriers, as well as new opportunities for creative problem solving. How were you able to achieve success on this action? How can you make it a long-term habit?
Esther Dean 7/16/2020 7:56 PMI brought my own reusable bottle walking instead of using a one time water bottle. By leaving your bottle with your sports gear, in your kitchen, or by the door you can remind yourself to grab it instead of a plastic, one use bottle.Â
