  • Reflection Question
    Lifestyle Support a Sharing Economy
What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

It was nice to get to share with others through a different platform many ways to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! Thinking of all the things at once can be overwhelming, daunting at times, with the support of those around you and taking small steps at a time, helps a lot and makes it easier to add things on as you feel comfortable and learn more!

It has been quite a month! I thought I knew quite a bit going in to this challenge, but I was still able to learn more throughout and it was so encouraging to see so many others joining in and learning more too! Can't believe it is almost over, but hope to continue many changes after it ends, and hoping to add on a few new ones I've learned about too!

    Lifestyle Naked Bins
Does changing the lining of your waste bin change the kind or amount of trash you produce?

Well, already trying to cut back on plastic containers/wrappers, this is another reminder for wasting less. Seeing the bin "naked" makes you want to keep from needing it as much.

I agree! Having the "naked" bin in our office has been helpful! Because we empty out the trash every day we had been using so many unnecessary trash bags. I like how we just add it to the trash that is already going out.

What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

This one is harder to remember for me, so I am still learning about this one. I while shopping I have noticed even some shoes listed as vegan products and I now know even more companies that use recycled materials for some of their clothing lines, even H&M.

I think it is Great to see all the encouragement on here! So many people with tips, tricks, and success stories! I know Maria told us that we only have 6 days left, we are also Really Close to 6th place! So feel free to remind your friends to check in, and as Maria said, you can go back a few days if you missed some and add in what you did on those days too. :D Happy to see all the progress being made, it is nice to get to see statistics showing "every little bit counts".

  • Reflection Question
    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Mary Duncan's avatar

This one is hard. So many things come in plastic, it seems to be everywhere at the grocery stores. Also, on South Padre Island, we only have a few grocery stores to choose from. This month I am avoiding buying individually packaged goods, like granola bars or burritos individually wrapped.

You can home make yoir granola bars at home. So simply and you can customize it then package in containers.

That’s great Mary.  I try to buy in bulk and then separate into smaller containers (we have reusable containers for the frig). You idea if individual granola bars is good! I might skip those for awhile

Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

I love to travel, so this one is quite important to me! I have also noticed that when I travel and am carrying my own container and straw, or asking for no straw, it does get noticed, and when friends change these habits, they are always Excited to let me know about it! I have some friends that after watching me do these things continue and expand their plastic free journey and inspire me to do better too!

There is a restaurant here in Kansas that when we go in and they bring our drinks out  they say oh no straws for you because you are saving the Sea Turtles!  It makes me HAPPY inside to know they remember NO STRAWS! Keep up the good job Mary.🤗
