I missed the camaraderie of being in the office and having the encouragement of my team mates to keep up with the challenge. Doing this virtually is more difficult. Next year will be better! 😊🌏

    Family Get Rid of Glitter
How can you and your little one exercise your creativity without creating more plastic waste?

    Jody Elam-Foote 7/31/2021 2:28 PM
We will find and use other colorful and creative materials that are plastic free in our crafts projects and not use glitter or glitter pens anymore. My nieces and nephew's understand that they need to do their part to keep their environment safe and clean and are passionate about recycling.

  • Reflection Question
Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutral
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

I found out that I was 52% lower than the average American but I know that my family can do better. I was surprised that the average Indian uses much, much less plastic. We should take lessons.

Which documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?

We watched "The Story of Plastic" and was appalled to learn that only 14% of plastics are recycled and only 2% effectively. Did you know that 8 million tons of plastic go into the ocean every year? Other countries are banning single-use plastics and taking a much more proactive approach to removing plastics from their everyday lives. Fin d out more about this film and what you can do to help.

Here's another great tip. Use matches instead of disposable plastic lighters or invest in a refillable metal lighter.

  • Reflection Question
Personal Care Back in the Bowl
Why is it so difficult to understand the impacts our purchases and waste have on other people, animals, and places? How might your experience with this challenge impact your future consumption and choices?

This challenge has definitely made me look more closely at my purchasing choices and how the waste affects others as well as whether the purchases can be recycled.

As a customer, you have enormous power to get the companies that you purchase from to use sustainable packaging. Many companies are now exploring ways to maximize nontoxic recyclable and compostable packaging content. Please email or tweet the companies you purchase products from and ask them to consider switching to 100% sustainable packaging - the Sustainable Packaging Coalition is a great resource to suggest as a starting point. Most companies really listen to their customers - you'll be surprised how many respond (and you may receive some great coupons for your trouble!)

I will talk to them about the importance of reducing plastic packaging by replacing plastic packaging with reusable/refillable packaging such as glass or possibly reducing their purchases in general as well as buying used.
