    Food Use Reusable Containers
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

Glass jars from things like pasta sauces or pickles make great food storage containers! I’ve also used them for flower vases in the past!

I’m sad that this ecochallenge is over, but I’m so glad that I did it! I learned so many ways to use less plastic that I never would have thought of otherwise. Most of which are simple changes that I’ll never have to go back to using those plastics

How can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?

It’s so much easier to use refillable shampoo/conditioner bottles when traveling! You can use the shampoo you already have at home instead of buying the small versions of them. I told my friends before we went to the beach for the weekend to do the same and it ended up saving them money and time.

Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

This was much easier than buying snacks at a convenience store. You also save money and time by pre-packing your snacks!

I got these reusable silicone “lids” / food savers from IKEA a few years ago and they work great! No need to buy plastic wrap anymore

I absolutely love my metal, double insulated reusable water bottle!! It holds more water than a regular plastic bottle and it keeps it ice cold for hours! I can’t remember the last time I used a plastic water bottle
  • Reflection Question
    Family Provide the Alternatives
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) does your family regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Alexis Fleming's avatar

Most of our single use items come from the food we buy. We always make an effort to use reusable bags at grocery stores but the packaging is what gets us. We will always purposely get produce that isn’t wrapped in plastic and try to buy things in cardboard. We are still working on certain food items such as meats that are almost always come in plastic.

In what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?

    Alexis Fleming's avatar

People are always spending a lot of time on social media these days. Sharing values on social media is almost a guaranteed way to make sure your message is seen. I’ve seen a lot of Instagram stories and posts from my friends and coworkers and it makes me look into researching more ways to be plastic free!

What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

Bamboo toothbrushes are biodegradable!! What other reason do you need?? I got these two for only $4 so it was an easy switch for me. I also think they look nicer than the plastic toothbrushes 🤷🏼‍♀️

If I ever forget a reusable bag when going to a store, I always end up carrying everything out without a plastic bag no matter how much stuff I have 😂

Hahahahaha same! I sometimes get creative with the things I buy to see if I can store some things inside one another or to test how much my pockets can hold  lol
