Jordyn's actions
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Bathroom
Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 30 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 3 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Family + Pets
DIY Cat Litter
I will swap out my cat's litter for sawdust, mulch, or dirt with baking soda.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 5 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 5 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Family + Pets
Thrifty Pets
I will find secondhand sources for my pet's water/food dishes, collars or leashes.
Family + Pets
All Natural Pet Toys
I will give my pets natural alternatives to toys like femur bones and antlers, canvas, natural rubber, hemp, rope or cotton toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Family + Pets
Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
I will swap out my single use plastic bags for a pooper-scooper.
Community
Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.
Community
Host a Watch Party
I will host a watch party with friends and/or colleagues to watch and discuss a movie about plastics.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 25 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Kitchen
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Community
Tour A Waste Management Facility
I will spend at least 15 minute(s) touring (virtually or in person) a local dump/transfer station, material recovery facility, and/or landfill to learn about our local waste and waste recovery streams.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 1 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 20 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bathroom
That Was a Close Shave
I will replace my disposable razors with steel razors.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Join a Cleanup Effort
I will host or participate in a beach, highway, river, or other cleanup effort in my community.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro
Contamination prevents what is recyclable from being recycled. I will spend 10 minutes researching which materials are accepted by local haulers or drop stations in my community and recycle only those items.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 3 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.

-
Jordyn Garnett 7/30/2023 7:12 PMDoes anyone have any for sure changes they are going to make towards their plastic habits? Such as reusable cups? -
Jordyn Garnett 7/30/2023 5:33 AMI hope everyone doing the challenge is learning more from it! Not to mention the amount of plastic they accumulated throughout the month (or less!) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Travel ToiletriesWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Jordyn Garnett 7/29/2023 1:04 PMBenefits of using bar soaps is they are a lot easier not to mention they last a lot longer. I know recently people have been making bar shampoo and even conditioner that is a lot nicer on your hair than cheap shampoo and conditioner. It is an action for your life you will need to get used to so it does take some time, it is easier on trips as you aren’t there for a long time but good to test it out. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Brush with BambooWhat are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?
Jordyn Garnett 7/29/2023 1:01 PMSwitching to a bamboo toothbrush is very beneficial to the environment as it eliminates unnecessary waste, it also cleans just as good as a plastic toothbrush. Another benefit to a bamboo toothbrush is bamboo is very renewable source as it grows very quickly and can even continue growing after being cut! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Ditch Dryer SheetsOften, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?
Jordyn Garnett 7/29/2023 12:59 PMSpeaking of the dryer sheets I found a TikTok that says they’re bad for the environment but also the fact that they aren’t really needed when doing laundry. Other single use items that are harmful to humans could be single use cups, I’m sure each time you go outside you’re bound to see a cup, not only is it harmful for the environment it’s also harmful to humans. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Invest in a Pooper-ScooperHow are caring for your pet and caring for the environment connected for you?
Jordyn Garnett 7/29/2023 12:47 PMCaring for my pets and making sure the least amount of plastic is accumulated is connected as not only am I adding less pollution to the environment but I’m also helping other animals out in the process (wild animals that is) -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Follow the Chasing ArrowsRecycling right requires both systemic change and personal and community awareness. How can you expand what you've learned about the chasing arrows symbol to encourage broader changes in your community?
Jordyn Garnett 7/28/2023 11:02 AMAfter research I found out items that cannot be recycled can’t used the chasing arrows symbol, but that can still be fought around due to state recycling criteria. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Learn about Plastic ProductionWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Jordyn Garnett 7/28/2023 11:00 AMOne of the big impacts plastic production can have is harming life, humans included. It tears down the environment, animals end up either trapped or eating the plastic, which in turn humans who eat seafood then ingest that same plastic. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Travel EatingWas this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?
Jordyn Garnett 7/28/2023 10:58 AMIt was easy to plan food when traveling and the only thing it changed was the cost of buying food went down so more money for the trip, as well as less stops so we get there sooner, so highly recommend doing it if you don’t like spending money/ multiple stops -
REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Numbers EverywhereWere you surprised by what the different plastic identification numbers mean? How can this information help you become a better recycler?
Jordyn Garnett 7/27/2023 5:52 PMAt first I didn’t realize plastic with recycling was numbered in a way, as well as how these numbers help categorize specific recyclables. This information can help me become a better recycler by using these identifications and recycling them by these identifications.
