I found a good template for sending emails to brands/stores about their packaging! Always a fun evening activity to harass big corporations about their less-than-ideal environmental policies! :D

    Hello [Company Name],

My name is [Name] and I recently purchased a few items from your online store. I have been a fan of your brand for many years.

Recently, I noticed that some of your packaging was non-recyclable. [List what parts of the packaging were unsustainable].

I have been practicing a zero-waste lifestyle by refusing to use single-use plastics and making the best effort to divert trash from landfills. Businesses that are dependent on single-use plastics are contributing to many of our environmental problems.

These plastics take over 500 years on average to decompose and end up polluting our oceans, lands, animals, and sitting in landfills for longer than the lifecycle of the actual product.

Unfortunately, this means that [product] can no longer be part of my routine because it contains packaging that is non-sustainable and harmful to our environment.

I would love to continue supporting you. I would like to suggest a few options to make your business more sustainable.

[List 2-3 options for alternative packaging]

I would love to cooperate with you in some form thereafter to promote your sustainable practices with my friends and family.

I really appreciate your consideration in regards to this issue and hope to hear back from you. Thank you for your time.
    Sincerely,

    [Your Full Name]

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

I think that trying to express my personality without buying new things is actually a really fun challenge! I have never really been a person to buy clothes unless they were absolutely necessary, and even then most of my clothes come secondhand, but it's interesting to think about how one could still express themselves without actually purchasing anything. Trading items with friends or family might be a good option, or even repurposing old items into something new and fresh. I am definitely not crafty enough (nor concerned enough about my appearance to actually try) but I am sure there are plenty of talented crafters that could make some amazing outfits from old outfits.

Went to my local track this morning and found it was completely covered in trash... It's pretty disappointing to go from a community where everyone is very eco-minded and concerned about the environment to back into the real world where it seems like no one cares. I spent a few minutes cleaning up, but it pretty much certain that if I go back tomorrow there will just be even more garbage. People are so frustrating. I get that it can be hard to reduce consumption of plastic, but come on, can't you at least throw it in the recycling bins that are less than 10 feet away?

As you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?

What did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?

I feel like most of the information about plastic contained in these articles is relatively well known. We know all of this. We know there is too much plastic in the oceans, that the surface of the earth is covered in plastic, that plastic releases chemicals that are harmful. And yet, despite knowing all this, we continue to make and use plastic relentlessly. The only way that this problem can ever be solved is if it stops at the very beginning, with the production. But then, there is the issue brought up of what could replace the plastic in providing the many goods cheaply as they exist now. It's just such a massive loop of a problem with no real end in sight.

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

It was interesting to see how much plastic I actually still use, despite the fact that I consider myself to be very conscious about it and that I try to use it as little as possible. Those little bits and pieces of spare plastic from this and that really do add up, though. My consumption was lower than the average American's, but higher than the average European's. I would like to get my consumption down to the European standard, or even lower.
