Reusable Face Coverings

Disposable masks are made of mixed materials and not recyclable. When possible, I will reduce my waste while protecting myself and others by wearing a reusable face covering when in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.

In what other ways can you use creativity or innovation to reduce your waste while adapting to our current times?

We haven't been traveling as much as we would have this spring/summer, so that has cut down on waste. I find I use more disposable items when traveling, since I feel I have less control over my environment and what's available.

A random source of plastic I had never thought about before - individual sauce packets, like ketchup and soy sauce! I can ask to skip them if I'm taking the food home, but they are so convenient on the go. For that matter, my regular home containers of these sauces are plastic as well. I have seen glass at restaurants, but not at my regular grocery store. Any tips for these?

Man this is such a good question. I have no idea! We need bulk refill for condiments!

What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

The easiest way I can think of to encourage others to switch is to gift them one to try! I find this helps with many eco-friendly swaps. Many people are willing to use the alternative options if presented with them but may not have the extra motivation to go out of their way to research or source them.

Does your child play differently with natural or repurposed toys than with other toys? If so, how?

The novelty of toys that would normally have gone into the recycling bin (oatmeal container, cardboard tube or box) tends to make them favorites for a few days. The fact that I don't care if he destroys them also opens up some play that I would tend to discourage.

I started using my new bamboo toothbrush from Eco Maniac (at the Old Beach Farmer's Market) yesterday. I had been warned that it might take some getting used to, but I didn't notice much difference from my plastic one! My teeth feel nice and clean.

How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

With the increase of take out and trying to support local restaurants, I've accidentally accumulated some plastic utensils. I'm trying to hold on to them and reuse them to at least make them not single use plastics. My mom used to save plastic forks and spoons to put in lunch boxes in case they accidentally got thrown away, but we were encouraged to bring them home to wash. I'm finding myself returning to that policy now!

Hales, I'm gonna need a bunch more! It won't be much of a prank with my half dozen forks...

You could always reuse your utensils to prank a friend by forking their yard! (jk maybe don't... or do...)
