This water bottle...and sometimes coffee mug...has become my best friend this month.  Thank you Ecochallenge and Sea Turtle Inc. for this challenge.  It accomplished exactly what you wanted it to by creating a change in my behavior that will last past the month of July.

I swim a mile each year for my mom who died of lung cancer 7 years ago.  This swim is through an organization called Swim Across America and the funds raised go to cancer research.  Look at what they just announced!

I've tried to be outside as much as possible on this vaca to Connecticut.  Went on a hike with my son and a bag to pick up trash along the route.  There was very little on the trail but a whole lot in the parking lot.  Theo did great!  It was only a mile, but hilly.

I am so empowered when I do something good for our Earth with a group of people.  Second only to doing the right thing, is meeting like minded people.  I'm thought of as a tree hugging hippy to my family and friends.  I don't mind that, I wear it as a badge of honor.  But I wish it wasn't such a novelty, I wish everyone was a tree hugging hippy.

My boys and I leave from Texas to Connecticut today for a week.  We are each bringing reusable water bottles.  One is a promotional item and two are hand-me-downs.  So far, I've only had conversations with my family.  Not everyone is as enthusiastic as I am.

There are so many airports with water refill stations, I just Love seeing them and seeing how many plastic one-use bottles were avoided! Great job getting your boys to use reusable bottles for your trip too!

In what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?

I've been posting on my InstaStory some of the things I have been doing to reduce my use of plastic.  It keeps people informed about what I'm doing and I hope that it inspires them to do the same.  Both in July and beyond, the people who see me talking about it on social media might ask me about it.  So, it's a conversation starter.  Added bonus, I might discover a friend who has similar values if they reply.

What are some of the cases you could make to an employer for why switching to durable dishes and utensils is actually in their best interest as well?

Although I plan to talk about reusables with my boss, that isn't why I clicked this particular action.

I am going camping with 20 folks to Colorado in a few weeks.  We just found out that the water line is busted at our camp site.  That means we are going to have to haul our own water in.  They want to buy 100 gallons of water in plastic gallon jugs.  What?  I quickly looked up the cost of collapsible 5-gallon jugs and shared that with the group.  No one was on board.  I reminded them that it's plastic!  They said they would dispose of it properly.  I reminded them that we didn't have to create the waste to begin with.  It was met with crickets.

I just got a text saying that upon further reflection, they decided to go with the collapsible reusable jugs.  So excited that this challenge gave me the courage to suggest an alternative and that they were open to it [eventually].

Love this and way to go!  We go camping often but fill our water bladders. What time of collapse jugs do you use?  I have never seen those.
