This month has been pretty great in terms of learning new things about plastic and why it isn't so great for us.  I mean, just because something is 'convenient' doesn't mean it's good for us.  Sort of like just because something is legal doesn't make it right.
I can't change the world.  But I can change how I live in it.  And maybe, possibly, perhaps, I can influence others by how I live.

Here's a testimonial for you: I'm 66 years old, I can't see well without my glasses, and I shave in the shower.  I used a traditional, non-disposable razor yesterday for the first time in ... decades.  A great, close shave and not a single nick or cut.  I highly recommend it!

    Why my pets are awesome?
My cat has a borderline personality and low impulse control - it's been like living with a feral cat for the last 16 years.  But she's been important to me when it counted, when I didn't have anyone else.
My dog is the best.  He also has special needs, but I can't imagine my life without him.
They both shed like a . . . well, you know.  So fur management is never-ending.  Took me a while to come to grips with it, but it's part of my life because they are.

Do some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?

Oh I've definitely had the itching, irritation, underarm "pimples" ... I've been making my own deodorant.  It was fun to get used to, but it seems to do the job and I feel better about it.
  • Reflection Question
Personal Care That Was a Close Shave
What have you noticed about the economic and social impact of switching to steel razors? Was there ever really a need for disposable razors, or do you think it was just a way to sell more things?

A way to sell more things?  Uh, yeah.  It's what we've become all about - advertising.  I hate advertising.  Disposable razors are nice, but they aren't necessary.  I'm not worried about going back to my roots in shaving!
  • Reflection Question
    Personal Care Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

Most of the clothing and accessories I have purchased in the last 20 years have come from thrift stores ... and they go back to thrift stores.  I haven't even visited a shopping mall in the last 10 years.  Most of the jewelry I wear I have made myself.  So, I really think I'm doing ok here.
  • Reflection Question
    Lifestyle Ditch Dryer Sheets
Often, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?

    Jayne Hardwick's avatar
    Jayne Hardwick 7/11/2021 4:22 PM
Honestly ... I've developed the belief that most things that are human-made are dangerous, to humans and others.  It's nearly  overwhelming for me to think about.
  • Reflection Question
Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutral
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

    Jayne Hardwick 7/11/2021 4:17 PM
I have to say it didn't surprise me too much.  I've made a concerted effort to get plastic out of my life.  It's tough, but I'm getting to plastic free.  One step at a time.

What did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?

Plastic is everywhere.  The roads are littered everywhere and most of it is plastic.  I worried about the oceans when I lived in Florida.  In Tennessee it's the same kind of danger.  How can we expect animals to know it's dangerous for them?!?

Packaging is the most wasteful thing in the universe.  Something hard to do without really ... but using recyclable materials can at least help.
