"Growing up on the beaches in Florida I would see so much plastic waste in the sand, water, and all surrounding areas. This cause is very important to me to help our oceans and the animals within them survive and thrive!"

I have been MIA on my eco-challenge page but REST ASSURED I have been doing my challenges just continually forgetting to check in. You might see many of my reflection questions answered today as well as my check-ins. I apologize for the spam but realized I needed to catch up on things I have been doing.

Community Tour A Waste Management Facility
Landfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?

Instead of an in-person tour. I took a virtual one with my wife who is a civil engineer. She gave me valuable insight that I did not know before. Landfills are enormous and show just HOW much waste we really accumulate and throw out every hour and day. Puts my daily waste into perspective.
  • Reflection Question
Lifestyle Buy Only What I Need
As you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?

    Connor Harris's avatar
    Connor Harris 7/26/2021 8:36 AM
I am not purchasing many health and safety items in my day to day life so this DRASTICALLY reduced my spending. Most of my spending comes from "wants" instead of "needs." This helps me to be more mindful of my willy nilly spending.
  • Reflection Question
    Personal Care Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

Re-using clothes over a long period of time would help to reduce my purchasing of clothes. Also, my wife is an expert sewer and can help to make new clothes or fix my old ones when they get ripped or too small. This all helps reduce my wasteful spending and buying.
  • Reflection Question
    Personal Care Just Say No
Do some research on polystyrene and polyvinyl. How many items in your house already contain these toxins?

    Connor Harris's avatar
    Connor Harris 7/26/2021 8:34 AM
TOO MANY TOO COUNT! It is quite crazy how many products include these chemicals and I will have to be more mindful about this in the future.
  • Reflection Question
    Personal Care Brusha Brusha Brusha
What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

    Connor Harris's avatar
    Connor Harris 7/26/2021 8:33 AM
Bamboo toothbrushes would reduce my plastic use overall. I would talk to them about the benefits of switching over and how, as a community, if we all switch we could greatly reduce our plastic consumption.
  • Reflection Question
    Personal Care Lather Up
What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

    Connor Harris's avatar

Bar soap seems to last longer and actually be cheaper so this will, over time, help to reduce my spending on product. Personally, it will help me reduce my plastic waste/usage to help our environment.
  • Reflection Question
    Personal Care Pearly Whites
Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

    Connor Harris's avatar
    Connor Harris 7/26/2021 8:31 AM
I can completely stop purchasing plastic tubes. After, I can discuss with family and friends how the change is not very hard and will greatly impact our environment. On top of this, I would try to push them to tell a few friends, passing it forward.
  • Reflection Question
    Lifestyle Support a Sharing Economy
What are the benefits of a sharing economy? How could a sharing economy change the dynamics you have with friends, family and/or neighbors?

They help to build a positive and healthy community. It would, hopefully, bring us closer which is somewhat has. I have gotten to know more people around me. My cantaloupes have been shared far and wide.
  • Reflection Question
    Lifestyle Travel Eating
Was this action easy or difficult to do? How did it change your travel experience?

When travelling, it actually was not difficult to bring my own snacks. I have switched over mostly to nuts and fruits when travelling. It has reduced the amount of money I have spent but sometimes increased time spent preparing for travel.
