Julia's Actions
Lifestyle
Reusable Face Coverings
Disposable masks are made of mixed materials and not recyclable. When possible, I will reduce my waste while protecting myself and others by wearing a reusable face covering when in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
Family
Learn about Environmental Injustice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 5 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Family
Discover Together
I will spend 5 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 5 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Community
Learn about Local Environmental Justice Concerns
I will spend 5 minutes learning about how plastic pollution affects members of my own community and how organizations in my community are working for change.
Food
Use Reusable Water Bottles
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 3 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Community
Sign a Petition
I will sign a petition in support of a plastic-related initiative in my state/province.
Community
Share My Actions
I will post to my social media networks about how reducing our plastic use is important for both environmental justice and conservation.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutral
I will visit rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Food
Use Reusable Containers
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Food
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 1 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.

Reflection QuestionFamily Discover TogetherWhat concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.
Julia Hartlage 7/18/2020 1:38 PMWe are causing irreversible damage to our planet through climate change, and unless we take action soon we will not be able to combat the rising temperatures and the damage that comes with it. This has already been causing a mass extinction, and it will continue to worsen unless we do something about it, which in this current political climate does not seem likely. -
Reflection QuestionFood Use Reusable UtensilsHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Julia Hartlage 7/16/2020 10:01 AMRight now as restaurants are closed for dining in, most are using disposable plastic for food packaging. Although many are still providing disposable utensils, they really aren't necessary, as everyone has reusable utensils at their house where they are receiving their food. -
Reflection QuestionLifestyle Reusable Face CoveringsIn what other ways can you use creativity or innovation to reduce your waste while adapting to our current times?
Julia Hartlage 7/16/2020 9:58 AMYou can use sprays instead of disposable wipes to sanitize surfaces, and buy refillable hand sanitizer instead of those that are individually packaged. -
Julia Hartlage 7/15/2020 1:21 PMI started leaving some metal straws in my car so that if I go to a drive-thru, I don't have to get a plastic straw for my drink. I used to always forget to carry my metal straws with me so this has helped me a lot! -
Reflection QuestionCommunity Sign a PetitionWhat is a plastic-related issue in your state/province?
Julia Hartlage 7/15/2020 1:19 PMBanning plastic in California is a big issue, especially because of how much plastic ends up in the ocean and hurts marine life. -
Reflection QuestionCommunity Share My ActionsIn what ways is social media an effective tool for sharing your values?
Julia Hartlage 7/11/2020 1:50 PMOn social media, you can share your views with a wide audience of people. You can provide ways that everyone can help, as well as data and links for people to get more information. You can also share posts by others, which is very easy but can still make an impact. -
Reflection QuestionCommunity Research Local Waste SitesIn what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?
Julia Hartlage 7/09/2020 2:44 PMIt was interesting to see how our area compares to both the state average and the national average in different environmental issues. Although we were lower than the national average for most categories, we were higher than the state average in several, which I found interesting. -
Reflection QuestionFood Use Reusable ContainersHow can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?
Julia Hartlage 7/01/2020 11:44 AMReplacing single-use Ziplock bags is something that I don't think many people do, but buying silicone bags has helped me use a lot less of them. -
Reflection QuestionCommunity Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutralWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Julia Hartlage 7/01/2020 11:39 AMMy annual plastic usage was 44kg, which was lower than the American and European averages. I didn't realize how low the Indian average was (11kg!). If everyone used plastic the way that I do, there would be more plastic in the ocean than fish by 2048, which surprised me since I was lower than the average.
