Food Preservation 101

A community class is being offered by the county. I signed up so that I can take advantage of the opportunity to ask experts about alternatives to plastic in food storage & preservation, then share the information with my network.

COMPLETED
ONE-TIME ACTION

Community

Learn about Environmental Justice

Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 25 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.

I’ve been thinking about how sustainable practices can be more difficult depending on your life situation… If you’re a single parent, struggling to keep food on the table and a roof over your head, the climate crisis may feel like a distant intangible issue that you don’t have time to worry about. Or if (like my parents) you’re on a fixed income and have physical disabilities that make food preparation and cleanup difficult, you may need to rely on inexpensive “convenience” foods, Unfortunately, “cheap” food (and even food from food banks) is often wrapped in single-use or hard-to-recycle plastic. Whereas, if you have the privilege of being able to shop based on criteria other than cost, you may also possess the bandwidth to make more sustainable choices. And hopefully you do. But maybe not. Because it isn’t always convenient or easy. And humans need an easy button. Point being, sustainable products should be the norm and should be affordable. Should. Not sure how we achieve that systemic & cultural change. But seeing the commitment of folks who are participating in this challenge, I feel hopeful. ~Its been a great month of learning, reflection, and action. Cheers to all y’all! (Here’s a farm-fresh bouquet for you. )

Had breakfast at a small neighborhood restaurant that sources local ingredients and avoids single-use plastics — my favorite type of eatery to support! When we pulled out storage containers for our leftovers, the server passing by our table laughingly exclaimed “You even brought your own to-go boxes?!” Before I could respond, the chef/owner, who is familiar with our habits, stuck his head out of the nearby kitchen and called out “That’s how they roll!” 😆 It’s a small place, so everyone got a chuckle out of the interaction.

I’ve had fun with my social media posts this month. Any excuse to talk about food + sustainability. 😀

Yes, this is a picture of my almost-full garbage tote. This is the first time in memory that it’s been so full. ~We have the smallest bin available, which is emptied only once a month, and sometimes we don’t even bother to set it out for pickup because there’s so little in it. But this month it’s nearly full, and that’s due to my Plastic Free July daily litter walks. I find myself feeling mostly glad — this represents litter that is no longer strewn across my community and possibly destined for our water sources — but also kind of annoyed that people don’t take responsibility for their own trash. #AllTheFeels

I’m following the recommendation from yesterday’s class about reducing food waste by reaching to the back of the fridge for carrots and leftover chickpeas (the new stuff should put in to the back so that you can easily see what needs to be used first, but I don’t have my rotational system down) to mix up a batch of carrot hummus. Yum!

Attended a useful overview about food storage & preservation, and ways to reduce kitchen waste. It seems like there are lots of “hacks” on social media, so it was nice to hear from experts and to share tips with folks who are interested in the topic. I plan to review the website and resources they shared to up my food preservation game.

Community Tour A Waste Management Facility
Landfills and recycling centers tell us a lot about our communities and purchasing habits. What did you glean from your tour?

It’s been a while since I visited the recycling center (pre pandemic) so I’d saved up lots of recyclables that don’t go in the curbside bin. Since regs have changed, I figured I should bring everything and see if any of it was still acceptable. Most things are, although I wonder if certain bins weren’t destined for the landfill. Regardless, the personnel were super helpful as I attempted to determine what some of my plastics were. The signage was a good visual cue, but sometimes I still had questions. I appreciated being able to ask an expert.

Listening to A Drop in the Oceans’s Make Waves e-mail about Wishcycling and the psychology of human recycling behaviors. As Spock would say… “Fascinating.”

Attended a community event yesterday where food was a focus. These yummy tacos were a terrific example of plastic-free street food. But I also saw lots of plastic forks being handed out or packages of fork/wet nap/napkin when all that someone wanted was a paper napkin. And tonnnns of plastic drink containers. Ugh. I think I’ll reach out to the organizers and see if they might consider supporting a plastic free event next year, since it always falls in July.
