The way A Plastic Ocean starts is so awe inspiring and beautiful,  but it quickly takes a jarring turn. What a sad start to my weekend!

I watched it alone last year, and then watched again this year with my boyfriend. It was a very different experience talking about it as we went and after. And like Celina, I still think about this one regularly.

My sister and I watched this one last year and at the start we were so charmed by the images of the whales and the beautiful sea. Things turned sour quickly after that but we are still reflecting on this doc a year later

I watched A Plastic Ocean. The state that many creatures live in, from shorebirds to humans, is startling. I'm going to have to look into nurdles more and see how they are used.

What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

I find it's easier to support small businesses when shopping for bar soap/shampoo/conditioner. Personally,  I let stepping out of my comfort zone to try something new. And there are so many interesting smells! Of course I feel better shopping environmentally friendly too!

I forgot that some towns don't allow stores to give out plastic bags! I was in a Stop and Shop the other day that only had paper bag (reusable bags available for purchase). The paper bags were kind of small and didn't have handles.  I wonder if that is meant to encourage people to bring their own bags?

We go through a lot of paper towels and napkins! Maybe if I am willing to do a "kitchen laundry," my family would be open to using cloth napkins. We'd look like the fanciest family in town AND we'd be helping the planet!

After 3 days, the Hellmuth's have finished our waste audit! I have learned 2 things. 1- we go through a lot of napkins and paper towels 2- we are bad at making tallies haha!

One area I still struggle with is animal cage bedding. My current foster critters need to be on paper opposed to shavings. Is there a brand that comes in paper packaging?

What kind of paper? The long shredded strips, or the confetti kind? If you can use the confetti kind, I know of several ZNE office shredders that would be happy to donate.

Started my waste audit today! So far it appears we are mostly throwing away things like napkins, paper towels, and snack wrappers. Some of these will be easy swaps I think!
