'Scuse me while I spam the heck out of the news feed but GUYS YOU ALL NEED TO GO TO LESS THAN. NOW! They have literally EVERYTHING you need to go zero waste or low waste/plastic free in your home and the owner is THE NICEST EVER.

I'm so happy we finally have something like that locally! Ashley, I'm in talks with the owner. Let's keep our fingers crossed we can work something out!

Seeing Hales post about slurpees really made me think about some of my personal shortcomings when it comes to trying to live a low waste lifestyle. As team captain, I always try to keep it upbeat and fun with tips and advice and local places to shop plastic free/low waste, but another important part of this whole month, and just generally trying to be plastic free, is to allow yourself room to not be perfect.

Life can be stressful. Sometimes, you need to just let go of some of that guilt!

I know my husband gets really stressed out by me when I forget my woven organic cotton produce bags and insist that we carry, in our hands, 10 pounds of produce through the grocery store. And when I also then insist that we can't get bags at check out and have to carry said produce through the parking lot to the car. And while I am probably not going to stop doing that, I think this whole thing is all about progress not perfection.

So in that spirit, confession time! What is one unnecessary plastic habit you just can't kick?! Mine? Stinking POTATO CHIPS 😒🤤

Here's to not sweating the small stuff (or trying not to... may or may not lay awake at night feeling guilty about each and every bad plastic decision I've ever made...) 😉

Lots of great chatter and tips on the feed from our VAQ staff! I am loving this. But I know we would all love to hear from our members, fans, friends, board, and community too! What are some of your favorite eco-friendly tips? Are there any great local places you like to support that are low or no waste? Share your plastic free motivation with us today! Here are some of my favorite tips:

-I always keep a reusable water bottle and to-go food containers in my car so I'm less likely to find myself in a situation where I need to purchase a drink in a plastic bottle or use plastic to-go food containers
-I have gone entirely plastic free in the bathroom, the kitchen, laundry, and for cleaning in all areas of my house. In the bathroom for example, I've switched to package free bars for soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and lotion. I have also invested in a reusable stainless steel razor and a menstrual cup. For laundry, I've switched to Dropps detergent and wool dryer balls (did you know that dryer sheets are made of plastic and full of tons of questionable gunk?!). And in the kitchen we use an amazing bar soap and scrub brush for hand washing and Dropps again in our dishwasher.

What are some of your plastic free successes team?!

      Check out ethique, Hales! https://ethique.com/

I'm still on the hunt to find something local but these products are awesome so I'm happy to use them in the meantime.

I'm living that menstrual cup life too! I'm loving my shampoo and conditioner bars. Can you tell me where you buy your lotion and deodorant?

What a fantastic team! We are off to SUCH a great start, and only one week in. We have already kept hundreds of pieces of plastic out of the trash and we have also volunteered time and contacted almost a dozen public officials - even while under some of the safety rules and regulations during COVID-19.

Voting with your dollar - supporting companies who are also making efforts to go plastic free - and reaching out to our public officials are two GREAT ways to move the ball forward toward a larger systematic change. We can do this!!

Today, I'm gonna make plastic free (and vegan) potato salad for the 4th with potatoes my dad grew, vegan aioli (made with aquafaba), and mustard from a glass jar. Not perfect, but baby steps in the right direction! How are you guys getting ready for the 4th?!
