As plastic free july comes to an end i was reflecting on how this challenge has changed the way things are done in my home. prior to this challenge my family and i were pretty environmentally friendly but there are always places you can work on. this challenge helped me to realize what those areas were and to share solutions with my family.
  • Reflection Question
    Pets Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
How are caring for your pet and caring for the environment connected for you?

the environment and my dog are two things that i love and so when i care for both things it makes me happy. what makes my dog happy makes me happy and when i care for the environment i know that in turn bettering the environment will better the condition of the climate and therefore limit the amount of heat related illnesses i get.
  • Reflection Question
    Community Research Local Waste Sites
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

where i live the landfills are located in multiple places, white marsh and cockeysville. poorer communities are most often affected by these landfills as they are placed there purposefully because it is often an act of racism/ classism or because people feel as though the poorer communities have less power to speak against the landfills.
  • Reflection Question
    Community Prevent Recycling Contamination
What have you learned about what is accepted by local haulers for recycling, what you can drop off or ship to certain places, and what is not recyclable in your area? What is the most difficult part of recycling for you?

One of the main things i learned is that the clamshell containers are not recyclable and that is because they flatten and can not be correctly sorted. i feel as though there should be a way to prevent that because so many people use them. Food packaging is the hardest part of recycling because you can’t recycle it if there’s food on it.
  • Reflection Question
    Pets All Natural Pet Toys
In what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?

It most definitely creates less waste. I have started giving my dog old stuffed animals. She loves them especially since they smell like me. So it is both great for her and for the environment
  • Reflection Question
    Personal Care Just Say No
Do some research on polystyrene and polyvinyl. How many items in your house already contain these toxins?

I’m not sure about the exact amount. That is because it is a lot. I learned that our milk jugs contain these plastics as do our outdoor chairs.
  • Reflection Question
    Pets Homemade Pet Treats
How could you reduce your waste even further (i.e. by making pet treats out of kitchen scraps or about-to-go-bad produce)?

Using scraps would be a great idea or when making a meal and i have left overs i can use those.
  • Reflection Question

Most of us know that the "3 R's" are reduce, reuse, recycle. Recycling is most heavily emphasized in modern Western culture. How could you incorporate other "R's" -- reduce, reuse, refuse, repair, repurpose, etc. -- into your lifestyle? How does considering implementing these "R's" make you feel?

    Anna Keefer 7/23/2021 5:09 AM
I can incorporate them into my life by using reusable items and using things like jars as vases. i can also get clothes fixed rather than throwing them out.

A few years  ago I was doing some research and found out that cigarettes are the number one piece of debris in the ocean and I was like there can’t be that many but now after walking around and picking up trash i realize how big of s problem and how prevalent they are.
