This has been a good exercise to keep me conscious of how embedded plastic is in my daily life (or how enwrapped we are in plastic...) I may have emerged from this month with some uncomfortable compulsions! It's actually painful when I can't avoid a plastic encounter or watch someone else throwing away an item I can't retrieve.

Has anyone figured out dental floss without plastic? I floss every night and need to stop buying plastic dispensers. I'm afraid to know what the floss itself turns into in a landfill

I have heard the argument that focusing on what individuals can do won't make a dent in the problems of pollution because it's really the corporations who are making the biggest mess. I understand why we shouldn't shift the focus AWAY from corporate responsibility, but to shrug at what we each can do is to cop out. When I look at the trash along the roadside or the stuff in the landfill in our town, I wonder why we buy buy buy buy buy, as if our lives depended on it. Our lives only depend on the things (food, liquid, shelter, love) that don't have to be packaged.
  • Reflection Question

What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

This thought is not exactly in answer to that question. But it's what I'm thinking about. My friend makes herbal salves that I am using in place of the body lotion I need after a shower, especially in this dry season. I want to learn how to make a simple salve and buy any ingredients like coconut oil in non-plastic containers.

Are there razors for women that aren't plastic? Maybe shaving is a dumb idea I've been suckered into. Maybe I can go razor free for the rest of my life!

Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

I've been making my own yogurt for a year or so now, completely plastic-free. The milk I buy is in returnable glass jars from a local dairy. It feels good to NOT continue collecting yogurt tubs, even though they are good sizes for storing all kinds of things. I already have plenty of old yogurt containers for storing things for probably the rest of my life.

I'm also working on making my own bread and if I buy bread, it is only loaves sold in paper bags.

A challenge I have is to learn to make good tortilla wraps, because I haven't yet found a place that sells them in anything but plastic bags (which I then have to keep the rest of my life and reuse).
