This has been a very instructive experience and we will continue our advocacy with vendors, suppliers and lawmakers!

    Lifestyle Watch a Documentary
Which documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?

PBS Frontline S2020 E14 Plastic Wars and There’s Something in the Water by Elliot (Ellen) Page 2019.  The second doc was very moving and showed positive results, the first showed the problem with corps not taking enough responsibility for plastics production material and waste, as well as the issue of where do recycled materials actually go?

Have learned so much, changed habits and became active with friends and family.  Has to be a good thing!
And there’s so much more to do…😮

Actually using a wet hand works better than rubber (or latex) glove to clean up pet hair.  And pet hair is compostable with yard waste!
  • Reflection Question
    Lifestyle Naked Bins
Does changing the lining of your waste bin change the kind or amount of trash you produce?

    Judith Lehman's avatar
    Judith Lehman 7/26/2021 9:47 AM
    Yes, producing much less trash!

It takes the same amount of time to use a tea ball of loose tea as a teabag(s).  No new packaging if buy loose tea in refillable container.
  • Reflection Question
    Family Provide the Alternatives
What single-use items (e.g. straws, coffee cups, vegetable bags, plastic bags) does your family regularly use? What could be substituted instead?

    Judith Lehman's avatar
    Judith Lehman 7/26/2021 9:40 AM
We reuse plastic bags that we already have.  Avoid new ones.  Have switched back to wooden toothpicks.  Continue to work around plastic packaging.
  • Reflection Question
    Lifestyle Travel Toiletries
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

    Judith Lehman 7/23/2021 7:24 AM
Now have refill station to use for travel sized containers and silicone bag instead of plastic for toiletries.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

Refilled my 8oz scent-free lotion container at BYOC and saved $5 vs. online AMZ.  This is a huge way of re-using plastic bottles for bath, cleaning, and make-up products and not throwing out and buying more!  Massage businesses should take advantage of these refill stations!  I will contact RelaxStation and let them know...

What did you and your family learn about environmental justice? What questions came up for you? What feelings?

Checked out the EPA’s Environmental Justice screening tool for one mile radius from my home, then one mile radius from downtown Ypsilanti.  There was a 20 pt difference between the locations for all types of pollution, Ypsilanti being higher.
