Fran's actions
Kitchen
Plant a Garden
I will plant an herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Kitchen
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 10 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 2 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Bathroom
Brush with Bamboo
I will replace my plastic toothbrush with a bamboo toothbrush.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Study
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 10 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.
Family + Pets
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 5 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Kitchen
Use a Reusable Mug
If possible, I will avoid sending 2 disposable cup(s) to the landfill per day by using a reusable mug or bringing my own travel cup.
Kitchen
Go Strawless
I will keep 2 plastic straw(s) out of the landfill per day by refusing straws or using my own reusable straw.
Community
Have a plastic-free craft station
Show youngsters they can skip the plastic when creating artwork to celebrate Plastic-Free July.
Community
Use a water refill station
Bring your water bottle with you, so you don't have to purchase single use plastic bottles.
Community

Advocate for Office Reusables
I will lobby my workplace to have reusable dishes and silverware in order to minimize disposables.

REFLECTION QUESTIONCommunity Advocate for Plastic-Free DiningWhat was your strategy in talking with your favorite restaurant's management? Did you find it to be effective?
Fran Marmillion 7/25/2023 6:04 PMWhat I've found is that most businesses want to reduce their waste, but simply lack the time and energy to do the research on how to achieve it. By offering easy and cost-effective solutions, it can take the strain off of them to come up with ideas of their own. Simple solutions like replacing plastic utensils with bio-degradable ones and/or only putting food in to-go ware only by request, can make monumental change when an entire town starts to take it seriously. -

Fran Marmillion 7/20/2023 3:23 PMHere in Alaska, we strive to move from "wish-cycling" to REcycling as much plastic as we can. Our recycling guidelines instruct that plastics must be #1 bottles or #2 jugs, to empty and rinse the bottles, and label are okay to leave on. Knowing what's allowed in your community makes for much more efficient recycling! -

Mary Hanks 7/18/2023 2:37 PMI've been looking for a clean-up event in my community, but I think it's too hot in Houston for people to think it's a good idea. It looks like a friend and I are going to have to organize our own. I'm glad you had such a great turn-out!
