Alaska SeaLife Center has been so excited to celebrate Plastic-Free July! However, we're committed to year-round education of guests on ways they can reduce/reuse/refuse/recycle plastics. Here is one of our permanent installations that engage patrons as they enjoy the aquarium.

Here at ASLC, we have taken many measures to reduce waste overall. For our touch pools we offer guests cloth towels that can be washed and reused.

What was your strategy in talking with your favorite restaurant's management? Did you find it to be effective?

What I've found is that most businesses want to reduce their waste, but simply lack the time and energy to do the research on how to achieve it. By offering easy and cost-effective solutions, it can take the strain off of them to come up with ideas of their own. Simple solutions like replacing plastic utensils with bio-degradable ones and/or only putting food in to-go ware only by request, can make monumental change when an entire town starts to take it seriously.

Today was Alaska SeaLife Center's second Beach Clean-up for Plastic-Free July! We had a stunning day to meander the beaches, picking up mostly fishing line and occasional trash. Thank you to everyone that came out!

This Plastic-Free July, ASLC is engaging our younger guests (and older ones too!) in plastic-free crafts. This is an excellent chance to chat with folks about how they can make small changes to reduce/reuse/replace/refuse/rethink plastics in their life.

Here in Alaska, we strive to move from "wish-cycling" to REcycling as much plastic as we can. Our recycling guidelines instruct that plastics must be #1 bottles or #2 jugs, to empty and rinse the bottles, and label are okay to leave on. Knowing what's allowed in your community makes for much more efficient recycling!

Did you know?! On average, Americans use about 500 million straws per day. That's enough to fill up 125 school buses a day, or 46,400 school buses a year! Stop by and check out our ENORMOUS straw sculpture, aimed at bringing awareness to plastic usage in our Rocky Coast Discovery area.

I've been looking for a clean-up event in my community, but I think it's too hot in Houston for people to think it's a good idea. It looks like a friend and I are going to have to organize our own. I'm glad you had such a great turn-out!
