  • Reflection Question
    Lifestyle Natural Fibers
What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

    Alex Middlebrook's avatar

Micro fibers shedding from clothing is an issue I knew nothing about! I never even thought about microplastics coming from my clothing until looking further into it. Natural clothing like organic cotton and linens are much better for the environment since they do not shed micro fibers the way synthetic materials like polyesters do. This is something I will be more conscious of in the future!

What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

Toothbrushes are another little thing I never thought about as far as plastic waste. But this is a simple switch that is better for the environment and our health. I’ve also switched to plastic free toothpaste! I’ve also shared this with my family and friends and encouraged them to make this simple switch as well.

I’ve started keeping extra tupperware in my car so that I always have something to put leftovers in if I go out to eat!
  • Reflection Question
Food Cook a Zero-Plastic Waste Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

    Alex Middlebrook's avatar
    Alex Middlebrook 7/23/2021 9:47 AM
I used to buy more single-use plastic packaging for meals (premade salads/meals/etc.) I have been much better about avoiding plastics with things like produce, rice, pasta, beans, nuts. Something I still struggle with is finding meats and proteins that aren’t packaged in plastic. When possible, I try to purchase meat at the counter to be wrapped in paper rather than plastic. Another struggle of mine is snacks, such as chips and crackers, that are wrapped in plastic. I have been trying to switch to plastic-free snacks like nuts and fruits. If I improve on both these types of items I could reduce my plastic use to near zero.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

    Alex Middlebrook's avatar
    Alex Middlebrook 7/23/2021 9:37 AM
Unfortunately I think many places have gone back to using disposables more after the pandemic. I need to be better about requesting that plastic utensils and packaging are not placed in takeout orders. And I think if more people refuse single use plastics and let restaurants know that they want better alternatives, businesses will listen to their customers.

What is a plastic-related issue in your state/province?

    Alex Middlebrook's avatar

Balloons are a huge threat to wildlife and constantly make their way into our oceans when released. Several states, as well as many towns in New Jersey, have already enacted bans on balloon releases. There is a proposed bill (A4322) that would enact a statewide ban! Many environmental groups are encouraging people to sign petitions to keep pressure on our representatives to get this bill passed.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Alex Middlebrook's avatar
    Alex Middlebrook 7/21/2021 5:32 AM
I have struggled with shopping completely plastic free at the grocery store. Plastic is everywhere, even in organic/bulk shopping stores. So I’ve started limiting the number of plastic items I let myself buy. I can generally get out of the store with 4-5 at this point. I also continue to ask stores to provide non-plastic alternatives.

Agreed!  Once you start making a conscious effort to reduce your plastic use, you being to realize we are surrounded by it.  We will continue to do the best we can big change usually happens gradually.  We are on our way to making big change!  Keep it up!

I now love bar soap/shampoo/conditioner! They are not only better for the environment but so much easier/lighter to pack! I will definitely find it easy to stick to this habit.

Ooo! Let me know how long a shampoo and conditioner bar lasts you. We have a lot of hair up in this house! I made my own bar soap. Doesn’t smell like much but leaves you feeling squeaky clean. I’ll share my recipe with you or bring you a bar or two!

This is pretty easy for me since I usually already do it. I often pack a bag and cooler of snacks and drinks to save money and waste. And when eating out, order smaller meals so I don’t have to worry about takeout containers.

When traveling, I now pack my own plastic—free shampoo/conditioner, soap, toothpaste, etc. as well as my reusable water bottle and a cooler with plastic-free drinks and snacks. Not only does this cut down on waste, but also saves money! I often travel with friends and family and always share my tips with them, too!
