Thrift Stores are always a great option since you are just saving items that may have otherwise been tossed aside. Switching up outfits and patterns and finding new ways to showcase items you own or making your own/altering items!

Thrift stores are great for trends that come back in style too! I also love the option of borrowing clothes from my friends!

I loved this challenge and hope to continue being mindful and incorporating less single use plastics in my everyday life.
  • Reflection Question
Food Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
Single use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?

Again, not just about the turtles. It's about all of us. Preserving the earth, helping ourselves, saving animals, etc. Pointing out specifics that can relate to them is the best way to get the point across instead of some side effect/byproduct that they coudl care less about. They should but some people have a very narrow view on these things. So relating to them then pulling them into the broader spectrum of why is usually the best route. Or purchasing them some fun reusables so they can be a little more excited or onboard and not so negative.

    Pets All Natural Pet Toys
In what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?

Plastics are harmful but its not like we eat them. But your dog or cat could be chewing on something that can be harmful to their health. The production and shipment of these toys also can contain numerous byproducts and more unnecessary plastics. By local natural toys or make your own from fabrics or other pet safe materials.
  • Reflection Question
    Lifestyle Ditch Dryer Sheets
Often, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?

    Ali Midgette 7/31/2021 1:58 PM
Plastic bags! Suffocation amongst other things. Plastic Water bottles that can contain harmful chemicals. And of course microplastics that come from numerous sources that can dangerously effect our health. It's not just about saving the turtles, its us too!

What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

Instead of purchasing new travel toiletries refillable or bars is the way to go! What is the point of these teeny plastic throw aways! Miniature things are cute, but they sure ain't. Any that I may already have I will be sure to reuse and advocate for not purchasing them to others in my life as well.

How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Ali Midgette 7/31/2021 1:48 PM
Bring your own tupperware when going out to eat! In your purse or backpack or just in the car. Have a clean one ready to go so that you can refuse throw away take out containers. Pack lunches in tupperware as opposed to sandwich bags. It takes less than a minute to clean and choose a more sustainable option. Buy fun/funky containers so youre excited about it! I love glass and snap top options because they feel clean and durable!

Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

AS I always the responsibility should be shifted to corporations instead of the consumer, but we can enact change in our communities. I have seen back and forths over paper straws for as long as theyve been around and luckily have seen more and more metal or reusable straw options in local stores or supermarkets. I think an option other than paper is where we need to move, recycled compostable or super low plastic options if we need single use and the push for not using them when they arent necessary or carrying your own. I have metal straws in my own home and talking about straws seems to be very common whether good or bad at least we are talking about it and enacting some change. I know they did propose bans in some areas but it is often hard to ban something without a viable alternative. I think leading by example and looking into more sustainable options for restaurants and bars is where we need to add some pressure. Refuse straws when able, when I am out with my friends (most of them) we opt to not have straws or have our though its inevitable that somewhere along my route especially in fast food instances there just arent too many on the go options with having to clean metal straws. I love that the discussions are prominent and hope that more change and positive attitudes come out of this as I have already seen increases within my communities.

There are sustainable glitter products out there! Best to inform any kids or crafters of the harms and point them in the direction of better options!
