I want to make dinner with as little plastic as possible. My challenge is that any meat product mostly comes in a plastic wrapper. My rice is in a cardboard box, green beans are in mason jars that I canned them in, but the roast .... The main thing is that I tried and am aware of the plastic use in my meal planning.

I did not do as well over the weekend with my actions, but I did utilize homegrown produce and eggs. I also supported a "local" friend who has a small family livestock operation. I purchased beef and pork products from her and supported her small farm instead of larger corporations for my meat.

I am excited that I was able to use a silicone bag (to store one of my ears of corn from my dinner earlier this week), instead of a plastic bag. I did not have a reusable container large enough to store the food item to be eaten later in the week. I really dislike food waste and this was a perfect way to preserve the food sustainably!

I made a great meal last night with home grown zucchini and sweet corn with turkey. I composted the veggie scraps along with my coffee grounds that I collected from my reusable k-cup filters.

I am looking forward to making sautéed veggies for dinner. I am going to use home grown garlic, zucchini, spinach, whole mushrooms ( I did not grow those) and top it off with fresh garden grown tomatoes. I'm excited!

I had a great conversation today about how reducing single use items plastic or paper can be beneficial financially and environmentally. The individual agreed to be more conscious about single use choices going forward.

I spent some time researching kitchen dish soaps today so that when I run out of my existing soap I can replace it with a bar soap and scrub brush. I am waiting to purchase until I have used all of what I have instead of wasting anything. I have already changed to bar shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, and face wash. Here is to one more step in the right direction :)

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

Even though I have started implementing sustainable practices in my life I approximately use 47.93 KG of plastic per year. That number feels astronomical. I will begin to research further ways to reduce my footprint for the next year and consider an offset payment going forward. Thanks for the wake up call!

With the holiday over the weekend it was a challenge to be plastic free, but I tried to be as conscious as possible in my actions to avoid single use plastics and opt for reusable water bottles and recyclables.

How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

You can choose items that can be composted, I avoid food waste by feeding my chickens produce that is not up to my consumption standards that they will still enjoy!
