    Food Start Composting
Do an inventory of how much food waste you would save from going to the landfill if you start composting all of the time. What are the added benefits of having compost that is readily accessible?

    Kayla Muzzillo 7/31/2019 12:42 PM
Since adding a compost I've realized that quite a bit of food goes to waste. I have improved my food waste over the year but there is still plenty of room for improvement on my end. In addition, having a compost provides my garden with nutrients. I would have had to purchase a fertilzer but using a compost is plastic-free. Although I should always strive to not let my food go bad, life happens and having a compost alleviates waste going to a landfill. If it goes to the landfill then the nutrients are not available for use and are almost trapped.

How could you mitigate issues that may arise if the restaurant does not want to let you use your own containers at first?

    Kayla Muzzillo 7/30/2019 11:09 AM
I could ask for the reasons why. Some places won't use a specific material and some places just won't take a container behind the counter for sanitary reasons. I do believe that as consumers we have the power to choose where our money is spent so I might also take my business elsewhere that does allow me.

How does working with others to clean up your community make you feel?

    Kayla Muzzillo 7/30/2019 11:06 AM
Cleaning up with others made me fill fulfilled. It was a nice way to connect with others, who honestly I may have never even met. This gave me a chance to meet people different than me that live in my community. I had a great time talking with Pat during the cleanup. It was like we weren't even working.

During my adventure with the city of Gainesville on Saturday, I found out that the city no longer participates in the inmate program (a reason we were out there). I feel torn about the political side BUTTTT I had a great time cleaning up my community!!!

Also I checked the weather before getting out there and it said 0% chance of rain. We got poured on (I thought it felt nice shhhh) 😊🤣

    Hey team!

One thing I LOVE about the posts I have been seeing on the dashboard is the patience. Sometimes I have seen that trying to live zero waste can come with some backlash from the community. For example, if you have no choice but to accept a plastic cup and have a metal straw, that is OKAY!
Just positivity has been on the dashboard.
     Learn from your mistakes 😊👍

I didn't meet one of my challenges today but I am trying not to be hard on myself (which I tend to do).

I made one of my favorites today...pizza! I made the crust from scratch, roasted the mushrooms (they taste like bacon!), local mozzarella, and tomato sauce. I will reuse the mozzarella and tomato sauce container 😊

How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

    Kayla Muzzillo 7/19/2019 8:35 PM
Today, I reused my container that big island bowl gave me originally. It is also the container I keep in my car for when I take leftovers home. For my utensils, I used my little bamboo spork that I like more than I thought I would!

The tuna was a huge treat for me! It's something I try not to order because the fishing market is terrible.

  • Reflection Question
    Pets All Natural Pet Toys
In what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?

    Kayla Muzzillo 7/10/2019 8:24 AM
My two dogs are very quilty of destroying the cute, fluffy stuffed animals I purchase. I have realized that the whole fabric turns into small pieces and are basically microplastics. It makes it almost impossible to contain when it becomes that small. If I purchase biodegradable fabrics that are made into toys, then throwing them away (or ideally composting) isn't as harmful to my environment.

In addition, the switch to antlers has saved me time and money! I have a 90 lb husky who eats a pig ear in 3 seconds. I try not to consume pork so why shouldn't my dog? I highly recommend antlers for chew toys. Antlers are naturally shed while pig ears are manufactured. Let's be honest, the livestock in agriculture is having a huge impact on the environment.

This challenge is helping me stay focused! It gives me something to cross check my actions and promotes self accountability.
