Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.

Pearly Whites
I will switch to a plastic-free toothpaste — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners

I will spend 10 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Bedroom
Catch Those Microfibers
I will use a microfiber catcher in my laundry, or install a microfiber filter for my washing machine.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Study
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Family + Pets
Discover Together
I will spend 10 minutes educating my family on the basics of living a reduced/no-plastic lifestyle.
Study
Dig into Bioplastics
I will spend at least 10 minutes researching the impacts of bioplastics and how to properly dispose of them in my city, and I will share this information with 5 friends, family, and/or colleagues.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Community
Learn about Environmental Justice
Using the action resource links below, my family will spend 10 minutes learning about environmental justice, causes of environmental injustice, and how plastic waste disproportionately impacts already vulnerable communities.
Community
Research Local Waste Sites
I will spend 10 minutes finding out where landfills and/or toxic waste sites are situated in my region and which communities are most impacted by these sites.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Kitchen
Glass Bottle Baby
I will replace 10 plastic bottles with glass or stainless steel alternatives.
Kitchen
Choose Reusable Food Storage
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 5 piece(s) of litter each day.
Community
Become a Recycling Pro

Family + Pets
Get Rid of Glitter
I will teach my little ones about microplastics while we do a craft project together using glitter alternatives.
Family + Pets
Balloons Blow
Although a long-standing festive tradition, balloons are harmful for animals and the environment. I will spend 10 learning about the dangers of balloons and find eco-friendly alternatives to use instead.

Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 10 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Kitchen
Plastic Free Lunch Boxes
I will only pack reusable cutlery, drinkware and containers in my family's lunches to reduce plastic waste.
Community
Donate Zero Waste Period Products
I will donate 5 zero waste period kits to young people with periods so that they can reduce their waste and the financial burden of menstruation while continuing their education.
Community

REFLECTION QUESTIONFamily + Pets Thrifty PetsHow does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?
C O'Donnell 7/30/2023 5:11 AMIt was easier! Instead of shopping in person or online for new cat food plates, we repurposed some of our old small plates we don't use any more. We didn't have to leave the house, spend any money, and or wait for them to arrive in the mail! -
C O'Donnell 7/29/2023 5:16 AMThree days left, Maryland Zoo! We're just 500 points away from 125,000 points. We blew past the our 100k point goal, let's do the same with 125k! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Clean Plate ClubHow easy was this swap for you? Did you have any concerns before making it?
C O'Donnell 7/29/2023 5:12 AMBars concern me because I feel like if not properly used, they can also become a vector for germs and leave things less clean than they started.
The refillable options, like the tablets in water, feel more accessible to me. On the other hand, these also cause me to wonder how effective at cleaning they are as well. I think as someone with OCD, and lots of obsessions and rituals around cleaning, it does not feel like something that will work well for me. That being said, intellectually I know it works just fine and is a reasonable switch for others without my fixations. -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Eco DetergentWas this an easy or difficult swap for you to make? Did you have any concerns before making the swap?
C O'Donnell 7/29/2023 5:08 AMI have conserns on how clean it can get things, especially with a job where dirt and sweat are a daily occurrence.
It is the same with things like natural deodorants. But, the deodorant has shown to be effective so I'll give the detergent a try too! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Sunshine BleachedThe simple act of hang drying your laundry can be an act of mindfulness. Where else in your daily routine can you make mindfulness a practice?
C O'Donnell 7/28/2023 4:50 AMI try to practice mindfulness in most aspects of zookeeping, especially when I feel rushed. Rather than giving in to that feeling, I try to take it as a sign to slow myself down. As someone who is often thinking about things several steps ahead, I work on being present when doing things like training or shifting animals. -
C O'Donnell 7/26/2023 5:07 AM5 days left Maryland Zoo, let's try to make it 125,000 points! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
-
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Pearly WhitesCurrently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?
C O'Donnell 7/25/2023 6:59 AMBy contacting representatives about legislation regarding materials used -
C O'Donnell 7/24/2023 1:09 PMOne week to go Maryland Zoo, let's go! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Homemade or Refillable CleanersWhat did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?
C O'Donnell 7/23/2023 3:20 PMConvenience was the biggest difference for me. I tried to do lots of research before beginning and then also spent a fair bit of time sourcing the ingredients.
