Our environment is like a patchwork quilt, each “patch” is dependent on those around it. If one part unravels, it effects the rest. (Kathy Hemeon’s 6th grade class. Del Paso Elementary School)

It’s not always possible to have reusable bags available, especially when traveling. For this trip we have paper bag in backpack to use on purchases.

Received paper grocery bag first day of trip and have reused that bag each day for daily purchases of only things we need for that day to reduce waste.

The Challenge keeps the needs and actions front and center on a daily basis.  It’s easy to do the right thing when you are in a fun competition with learning experiences available daily.  The challenge starting in August is continuing to think about actions needed daily.

This completion has been very informative and has also kept the focus on actions as a daily thought.

Which documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?

The story of plastic shows human nature to ignore the future for current gratification and profits. The cycle of increasing single use plastic globally cannot be solved without global unification, which doesn’t appear likely currently. We must continue to hold ourselves and the rest of the world responsible to reverse course.
  • Reflection Question
Food Cook a Zero-Plastic Waste Meal
Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

One conversion was to 5 gallon refillable water cooler bottles. Water consumption is hi to stay hydrated and eliminating single use plastic was a priority.
