Cheryl's Actions
Lifestyle
Travel Smart
If traveling, I will bring my own plastic free items (water bottle, grocery bags, collapsible food containers, utensils, straws, etc.) with me.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutral
I will visit rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Personal Care
Dam the Flow
I will use a menstrual cup and/or cloth pads
Personal Care
Lather Up
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, and conditioners with either a bar or refillable option.
Lifestyle
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me in a TSA approved reusable quart sized bag.
Food
Say No to Plastic Bags
If at all possible, I will not accept any disposable bags when making purchases, including produce bags.
Lifestyle
Reusable Face Coverings
Disposable masks are made of mixed materials and not recyclable. When possible, I will reduce my waste while protecting myself and others by wearing a reusable face covering when in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain.
Food
Use Reusable Containers
I will only use reusable containers instead of single-use plastic storage items (such as plastic wrap, single-use sandwich bags).
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Food
Use Reusable Water Bottles
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 2 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.

Cheryl Payne 7/31/2020 6:42 AMI've also tried to reuse plastic a lot more. Sometimes plastic packaging is unavoidable, but if I can repurpose it, at least it's better than nothing! -
Reflection QuestionPersonal Care Lather UpWhat are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?
Cheryl Payne 7/31/2020 6:39 AMI'm still trying to find a shampoo bar I like since I've switched off of Lush. But there are a lot of good options so I'll find one eventually! -
Reflection QuestionPersonal Care Dam the FlowDisposable tampons and menstrual pads are often quite expensive. What are the economic and personal benefits of this switch for you?
-
Reflection QuestionLifestyle Travel SmartHow can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?
Cheryl Payne 7/31/2020 6:38 AMIt's easy and cost efficient to pack ahead! There are always water fountains around to refill bottles, and having food packed ahead saves money on impulse purchases. -
Reflection QuestionCommunity Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutralWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Cheryl Payne 7/31/2020 6:37 AMIt's interesting seeing the total amount I use and a good way to start thinking more about the overall plastic consumption in my life. -
Cheryl Payne 7/31/2020 6:33 AMLast day to the challenge! Although I'm sure we'll all continue to limit our plastic use in August and beyond! -
Reflection QuestionLifestyle Reusable Face CoveringsIn what other ways can you use creativity or innovation to reduce your waste while adapting to our current times?
Cheryl Payne 7/31/2020 6:32 AMI've made 60+ reusable face masks since March, most of them out of fabric I already had so I didn't have to purchase anything for them. -
Reflection QuestionLifestyle Buy Only What I NeedAs you have reduced your spending, what have you noticed about your 'health and safety' purchasing habits? How might this change your longer term purchasing decisions?
Cheryl Payne 7/31/2020 6:31 AMI limited my purchases to things I needed, but that's something I've been doing so it didn't make much of a difference on my day-to-day this month. -
Reflection QuestionLifestyle Natural FibersWhat are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?
Cheryl Payne 7/31/2020 6:30 AMWhen buying clothes this month I tried to pick out 100% cotton shirts. They're more comfortable to wear and don't shed microplastics. It limited my options a lot, but there were still enough cotton shirts in the department store that I could pick out something I liked. -
Reflection QuestionLifestyle Travel ToiletriesWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Cheryl Payne 7/31/2020 6:28 AMI'm packing for a trip next month and having bar soaps and shampoo is nice because it saves on plastic and it means I worry less about things spilling!
