Connie's actions
Kitchen
Use Reusable Utensils
I will keep 10 plastic cutlery out of the landfill per day by using my own reusable cutlery.
Bathroom
Travel Toiletries
If traveling, I will reuse my old travel tubes to refill with my soaps or only bring bar soaps with me.
Study
Plastic History Buff
Single-use plastics are everywhere, but that wasn't always the case. I will spend at least 15 minutes learning about the history of single-use plastics and how it became ubiquitous in our daily lives.
Bedroom
Practice Sustainable Fashion
I will spend 15 minutes learning about the costs of fast fashion and begin trying to practice sustainable fashion in my own life.
Bedroom
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing and bedding made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Bathroom
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Study
Numbers Everywhere
The numbers #1-7 on plastics tell us a lot - and can help us be better recyclers. I will learn what these numbers mean and which types of plastics are accepted for recycling in my area.
Study
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Study
Follow the Chasing Arrows
The chasing arrows symbol we associate with recycling doesn't always actually mean something is recyclable. I will spend at least 20 minutes learning the different meanings the symbol can have.
Study
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Study
Estimate Your Ecological Footprint
I will calculate my ecological footprint, and from the results brainstorm and take action on ways I can reduce my annual footprint.
Bedroom
Eco Detergent
I will use laundry detergent that is packaged in glass or aluminum, or an alternative like soap nuts.
Kitchen
Fill a Water Bottle
I will use a reusable bottle and stop purchasing bottled water, saving 6 disposable plastic bottle(s) a day.
Bathroom
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Kitchen
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Bedroom
Sunshine Bleached
I will hang-dry my laundry to use the sun as a natural bleach alternative, or use another natural bleach alternative.
Bedroom
Ditch Dryer Sheets
I will use wool dryer balls or another plastic-free alternative to dryer sheets to keep my clothes static-free.
Family + Pets
Thoughtful Toys
I will only buy cloth, wooden or plant-based natural rubber toys. Or make our own toys from recycled items found in our home!
Family + Pets
Homemade Pet Food
I will prepare my own pet food to avoid plastic packaging.
Kitchen
Clean Plate Club
When I need to replace my dish soap, I will switch to a bar or refillable option.
Kitchen
Minimize Packaging
I will purchase food items with the least amount of packaging.
Bathroom
Homemade or Refillable Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products or choose plastic-free, refillable options.
Bathroom
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable options.

Connie Peterson 7/31/2023 1:31 PMThis was my first year doing this challenge. It was fun, challenging and so informative! I had already begun the process of eliminating as much single use plastics from my home a month before so this was seriously added incentive. I appreciate all of the great ideas from participants from all over the country! Great Job Team Reid Park! See you next year! -
REFLECTION QUESTIONBathroom Travel ToiletriesWhat is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?
Connie Peterson 7/31/2023 8:51 AMI will travel with my bars.. shampoo, conditioner, soap & lotion. I have been refilling my travel size mouthwash & q-tip containers for years. My deodorant is a refillable aluminum container. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Complete a Waste AuditWhat did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?
Connie Peterson 7/27/2023 11:18 AMWe generate very little waste at our house. We could always reduce it further by not buying prepared food for my "cheat" nights of not cooking from scratch. We could reduce our recycle waste further by reducing boxes from shipped items. I prefer shopping on line for many of our needs. I believe a delivery truck making 40 planned stops is better then 40 shoppers driving about... and.... I really hate shopping 😉 -
REFLECTION QUESTIONKitchen Use Reusable UtensilsHow can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?
Connie Peterson 7/26/2023 2:01 PMI don't have a need for disposable utensils at all. We don't eat fast food ever. I live in a 55+ community. The home we bought is on a "party" block (perfect fit) we gather often for appitizers & happy hour or BBQ's. I have a drawer full of utensils, serving silver... we use those. I am retired, my hubby works from home now but when we worked... I packed lunches, coffee, drinks and silverware in our lunch boxes. I do have bamboo cutting boards, cooking utensils but I never saw a need to buy special eating utensils. I read a great idea here about bringing your own "to go" containers when dining out.... BEST idea ever! I have set up a soft sided lunch box for my Saturday Indian Twist lunch out. -
Connie Peterson 7/26/2023 12:53 PMGrocery shopping done. 12 reuseable grocery bags and 6 produce bags! I did use store produce bags for radishes and romaine... they were dripping wet. -

REFLECTION QUESTIONStudy Plastic History BuffHow has learning about the history of single-use plastic shifted your mindset on plastics and their function within society?
-
Susan Rubin 7/26/2023 7:04 AMLizzy, I agree with you 100%. -
Lizzy Simpson 7/24/2023 9:12 PMRight! I was left feeling sad after all the research. But us doing this challenge will Make a difference, as the Lorax says “it’s not about what it is. It’s about what can become”

REFLECTION QUESTIONBedroom Practice Sustainable FashionHow can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?
Connie Peterson 7/24/2023 8:52 AMBlue jeans, flip flops & t- shirts. Retirement has its benefits. I bought 4 t-shirts this year only because the Vegas Golden Knights won the Stanley Cup and I had to have them 😊
