  • Reflection Question
    Pets Invest in a Pooper-Scooper
How are caring for your pet and caring for the environment connected for you?

This can be hard because I don't want to use a plastic poop bag when taking my dog for a walk, I often contemplate how burying it would be better so that I do not use plastic....but then I could be spreading canine diseases in the environment.  What is the trade off?

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

Honestly, I was surprised and horrified at how many kilograms of plastic I use a year. As someone who is pretty eco friendly and consious of my decisions, it can still be so hard to avoid plastic usage when SO many things at the grocery store are packaged in plastic. :(
  • Reflection Question
    Food Use Reusable Containers
How can you think outside the box (or bag!) when it comes to disposables?

For 3 years I have used only reusable containers for my work lunches with the occasional plastic baggy for chips. This year for my birthday I asked for those silicone reusable bags. They are great for chips/fruit/sandwiches in lunches and storing items in the fridge instead of using plastic bags. Next up: reusable produce bags

Why do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?

I had no idea chewing gum contained plastic!!! I used to chew gum pretty regularly for fresh breath after a meal / something to do. Definitely not a necessity and moving forward I will only chew gum that is plastic free.

Would anybody be interested in trying to make a change with the "million dollar view"? Personally, I am sick of and disappointed in hearing about all of the bird strikes caused by the large window.

We started composting in ARC a few months ago! We were approved to do food scraps and dead crickets/mealworm waste. We had room in one of our freezers to temporarily freeze the compost bucket to prevent maggots/flies and decay. I wait until the bucket is full and then dump it in the blue dump truck the hoof team uses for hay/poop. I received permission from Lisa Smith to do this, so check with her if your department is interested! I was going to start weighing is to see how many lbs we save from going into a landfill per month. Right now I would estimate 7 lbs a month? Its a start!

One of my tasks was to educate myself on fast fashion and the environmental impact of fashion. I did a fashion footprint calculator and was surprised to find my impact was low/medium (yay for being a low maintenance chick!). If anyone is interested add the task your dashboard for points in the challenge and right click on it for the educational links. Or here is the link for the calculator https://www.thredup.com/fashionfootprint
