This challenge really opened my eyes to how many single use plastics are used day to day! I hope that I'll be able to take these habits with me to lessen my plastic use as time goes on. Can't believe it's almost August!

So far my family is doing really great on not using so many plastic water bottles! It may not sound like much, but it was a real problem! Hopefully, we can keep it going after July!

How does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?

    Tara Scarberry's avatar
    Tara Scarberry 7/25/2021 2:13 PM
Buying used kind of freaked me out at first because I have a family that always assumes things were in the worst place possible before... But I really enjoy the feeling of not contributing more waste.

How are caring for your pet and caring for the environment connected for you?

I like to take my dog outside a lot. We enjoy playing in the yard, going swimming, going on hikes, all of that. For me, making sure there isn't any trash that she could pick up is huge - and overall making sure the water and trails are safe for her is a must also. If I want to take care of my dog at the highest level I can, I need to make sure that the environment is healthy!

    Pets All Natural Pet Toys
In what ways is supplying your pet with all natural pet toys better for your pet, better for you, and better for the environment?

    Tara Scarberry's avatar
    Tara Scarberry 7/25/2021 2:10 PM
Not only are all natural pet toys better for their personal health - but all the little bits and pieces left behind won't harm the environment as much! And I don't have to be worried about them swallowing something they shouldn't.
  • Reflection Question
    Personal Care Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

    Tara Scarberry's avatar
    Tara Scarberry 7/22/2021 11:58 AM
Personality and creativity can be expressed in so many ways! Of course accessories are an option - but you can make your own! You could even make your own clothing if you like that sort of thing. I personally will stick to drawings, paintings, and music!

What did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?

    Tara Scarberry's avatar

I've learned that there are a lot of natural ways to make cleaning items without all the added chemicals that they have in them. It makes me feel better, and honestly cleaner, than the pre-purchased. Also, I'm saving money by making my own in a reusable spray bottle!

What did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?

    Tara Scarberry's avatar

My family creates the most waste with food packaging and scraps, and packages... I have started composting to reduce the waste of food scraps, and have started looking for items that are shipped without plastics and in carbon neutral shipping when necessary. It has already slowed our waste a lot! Especially now that I have a large water filter with a spout in our fridge - we drink a lot less pre-packaged items now too!
  • Reflection Question
Food Ask My Favorite Restaurant to Reduce Plastic Use
What was your strategy in talking with your favorite restaurant's management? Did you find it to be effective?

    Tara Scarberry's avatar
    Tara Scarberry 7/22/2021 10:21 AM
I was lucky in the fact that I had a personal relationship with the owner, so I was just very friendly and told them that I was participating in the plastic-free July and wanted to share some information that I learned. I told them about some issues with styrofoam and other plastics, as well as getting the marketing strategy of saying that people are looking for greener options while shopping and purchasing food, so it may drum up business! Not sure if it will help too much, but at least now they are more aware and will look into it!

What are organizations in your region doing to address plastic pollution or other related issues? How can you support them?

It seems like right now OKC is going through the phase of trying to teach people about plastics and recycling. They just passed legislation this past April that expanded our recycling technologies - as well as passing initiatives to give business and residential areas more options on recycling. To support this, just sharing information so people know their options is a great way to help!
