  • Reflection Question
    Community Research Local Waste Sites
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

In our area - collection sites tend to be outside of the metro area, at nearby small towns or suburbs.  This can make it difficult for urban dwellers to responsibly recycle and dispose of hazardous waste.  In Iowa, we have had a 5cent charge for cans and bottles but our grocery chains no longer want to be collection sites and I can foresee this discouraging people from recycling.

What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

Until I did some quick research, I hadn't considered the impact of using plastic brushes.  Bamboo is cool and more sustainable and it also feels really good in your hand so I am probably brushing longer.  My dentist would approve!

How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

Shopping garage sales for fun jewelry/purses and accessories can repurpose/ update our "look" and reduce the amount of items we take to Goodwill and other collection sites.

Though our household has become smaller with children grown - we should go back to purchasing items in larger, refillable containers again to reduce plastic containers from laundry, cleaning supplies and gardening supplies.

I have really enjoyed the challenge to reduce single use plastics. It has sparked lively family discussion!

How does buying used differ from buying new? How does each purchasing decision make you feel?

Again I think it is satisfying to repurpose items rather than see them in a landfill.  To take it a step further, we donate unused items to our local shelter or vet.
  • Reflection Question
Personal Care Say No to "Flushable Wipes"
Even though they are marketed as "flushable," disposable wipes do not disintegrate in water or the sewer system, and actually release microplastics into our waterways. How does it feel to learn this information? What do you want to do about it?

We must all educate our  and friends to the misleading information that these are safe for the environment

reducing waste from other animals such as antlers and rawhide not only provides chew toys for our dogs but gives them a new purpose

We recently returned to a primarily vegan lifestyle and the connection to reducing plastic waste has been very collaborative.
