    Lifestyle Watch a Documentary
Which documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?

I watched Wasted! A Story about Food Waste.
There is so much food being Wasted in the world due to it not meeting supermarket standards of "beauty". The documentary went into ways to reduce the sheer amount. One solution is to face the problem of what is known as "ugly produce". There are companies that are popping up and selling perfectly good produce, but they just grew differently than expected called Misfit Market.

How can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?

I started a conversation with my family while they were packing to come to FL. We all found areas where we can cut down on disposable items. My family of 4 was able to pack for a week in only 2 suitcases since we all opted to bring 2 sets of clothes and only the essentials. It was a nice change to not have to decide what to wear every day or have those random items you throw in last minute & then don't use taking up space.
  • Reflection Question
    Lifestyle Ditch Dryer Sheets
Often, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?

Other single use items that are harmful are toothpaste and body scrubs that contain the micro beads. Cotton q-tips are not healthy to use to clean out ears properly.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Use Reusable Utensils
How can you be an advocate for using reusables instead of disposables for the rest of your community? Where are they currently dependent on disposable food packaging or eating utensils, and how can you convince them of the need for change?

    Ashley Smith's avatar
    Ashley Smith 7/16/2021 11:39 AM
Due to the pandemic and restaurants being forced to alter business models, more places are offering take out, which in turn means they give plastic cutlery to use. The businesses rely on quick disposable utensils to minimize gems being transferred. A change they could implement is giving customs a "credit" if they opt to not use plastics utensils in their to go orders. The takeout culture has shifted the momentum of going green back slightly, but persistence in change has not wavered.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Use Reusable Water Bottles
Using the links provided, investigate the bottling practices of water corporations. There have been many cases where the water rights of the local people have been violated or even completely disregarded when a corporation decides to bottle water from a particular water source. How can you advocate for those who have been harmed by this bottling process?

Advocating for a community that is affected starts with fully understanding the conflict of power for the water source and the importance of the role it has in the community. Most large bottling companies are aware of their impact, its the lack of empathy they have for the affected communities where problems arise. In this instance, one way that may be more effective is erecting alternative water collection plants. Harvesting water from the fog, catch nets, containment zones. This gives the communities access to reliable clean water while showing the companies they can save overhead costs by altering their bottling processes. Companies rarely change if it doesn't help their profits.

What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

    Ashley Smith's avatar

Since I've been using bar soaps and bar shampoos, I've realized that they've been lasting longer. The bars are beneficial in limiting the waste/amount I'd normally squeeze out of a bottle. The refillerary in tampa has so many great options!
  • Reflection Question
    Lifestyle Travel Toiletries
What is the benefit of using bar soaps or refilling your travel sized containers? Is this an action you think you will keep in your life?

    Ashley Smith's avatar

When traveling, the small traveling containers are the perfect amount. Saves on cash when arriving at my destination since I do not have to buy those toiletries.

It made my travel experience more enjoyable. I didnt have have relay on finding an place open during my odd arrival/departure times. I had access to snacks that I actually enjoy, didn't have to just settle for what was available.
  • Reflection Question
    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

    Ashley Smith's avatar
    Ashley Smith 7/15/2021 10:28 AM
The added plastic packaging seems like it's only serving the consumer, reassuring them that it's "safe" to consume since it doesn't need to be washed as it didn't come into contact with anything else. The producer has an added expense in the production of the products. The manufacturer of the added plastic lining also gains a benefit of an added product to their portfolio.

Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

It's nice to see which businesses are taking the small steps to reduce their own plastic consumption. Anything from reducing menu items, switching practices that use less plastic, or removing straws all together.
Examples: Busch gives out reusable straws with purchased drinks or none, chik fil a using paper straws, Starbucks altering lids so straws are not needed.
