Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

I have noticed that less and less businesses in my community are giving out plastic straws freely. For example, at a restaurant I was at yesterday used paper straws, and a different one only offered straws upon special request. I think this is a good solution, because people with certain disabilities need straws to drink, so straws still need to be an option. However, the majority of people don't need to be using plastic straws, so having paper straws upon request seems like a good idea to me. I rarely see people using reusable straws, but I know many stores near me do carry them as an option to purchase.

How difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?

This challenge is pretty easy for me. I am in the habit of always bringing a reusable bag, but sometimes I am given a plastic bag without being asked, and occasionally I forget my reusable bag and I end up needing a plastic bag. Even in these situations when I am given a plastic bag, I always try to re-use them a few times so they are not single-use.

How can/did you prepare to be successful in this action? Did you engage in conversation with anyone about your new habit?

I am going camping for a few days and I tried by best to pack re-usable plastic only; nothing that would need to be thrown out or pose any harm to the environment. Camping is a great way to try to reduce your plastic waste so it was not a very hard challenge, and something that my family would try and do anyway.

What is a plastic-related issue in your state/province?

In Seattle, discarded plastic can easily end up in Puget Sound and harm marine life. Most storm drains drain directly into the sound or other bodies of water with little or no filtration, so any improper substances emptied in them cause major issues.

Why do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?

I chew gum when I am bored and want something to do, usually as a replacement for mindless snacking. Instead of chewing gum or snacking when I'm bored, I try to spend my energy doing something creative or educational. For example, I'll learn about something new or spend time on my hobbies.
