Jianna's Actions
Food
Plant a Garden
I will plant a herb or vegetable garden using as little plastic as possible and to save from the plastic used buying herbs and veggies.
Food
Advocate For Better Food Packaging
I will advocate for alternatives to single use packaging at local grocery stores, markets, or work.
Community
Say No to Styrofoam
Throughout its life cycle, polystyrene (styrofoam) can harm people, communities, and the planet. I will refuse styrofoam whenever I can, making sure to kindly let people know why I'm asking for alternative packaging.
Food
Better Gum
I will give up gum or choose gum made from chicle or other plastic-free gum bases.
Food
Switch to Loose Leaf Tea
Because many tea bags and most sleeves and sachets contain plastic, I will switch to using loose leaf tea.
Personal Care
Green Beauty
When it's time to buy more, I will replace my beauty products with refillable, sustainable, and/or DIY options.
Community
Learn about Plastic Production
Plastic production, not just disposal, pollutes communities and harms people. I will learn about the impacts of plastic production on humans, animals, communities, and the environment.
Community
Estimate My Plastic Consumption
I will visit the rePurpose website, complete the 3-minute plastic consumption calculator, and explore how I can reBalance my annual plastic footprint.
Community
Keep My Community Clean
I will pick up 10 piece(s) of litter each day.
Personal Care
A Sustainable Flow
I will make the switch to sustainable, reusable period products.
Personal Care
Eco Deodorant
I will switch to a plastic-free deodorant — whether purchased or DIY'd.
Food
Cook a Plastic Free Meal
I will prepare meals at home each day without using any items packaged in single-use plastic.
Food
Skip Plastic Bags
When possible, I will not use disposable bags when shopping, including produce bags.
Lifestyle
Homemade Cleaners
I will make my own cleaning products at home.
Lifestyle
Travel Eating
If traveling, I will bring my own snacks and meals in my own containers to avoid the waste of take-out containers.
Lifestyle
Natural Fibers
When available, I will purchase clothing made with natural fibers, such as cotton, linen, or wool, rather than synthetic fibers.
Lifestyle
Complete a Waste Audit
I will conduct a waste audit - including recyclables and compost - to understand how much waste I create and where I can reduce the most.
Lifestyle
Buy Only What I Need
I will not buy anything except items required for health and safety.
Personal Care
Sustainable Suds
I will replace my soaps, shampoos, conditioners, and lotions with a sustainable, unpackaged, or refillable option.

Jianna Wankel 7/31/2022 1:14 PMIt’s been really good to check in and begin to be more intentional with my plastic consumption. I find it most hard to avoid in grocery stores. I would love to shop at more eco friendly places like farmers markets and such. -
Reflection QuestionFood Skip Plastic BagsHow difficult was this challenge for you? What made it easy or difficult?
Jianna Wankel 7/23/2022 8:33 AMThis one is harder than I thought it would be because almost everything is packaged in some type of plastic. It’s definitely got me cooking more veggies. I also already try to buy in glass rather than plastic if it is an option -
Reflection QuestionFood Switch to Loose Leaf TeaTake time to reflect or meditate over your plastic-free cup of tea. Share your thoughts and reflections with us here!
Jianna Wankel 7/23/2022 8:32 AMI got a reusable looseleaf tea strainer and I love it. I’m not sure if it’s just the tea that I love but I feel like it doesn’t take as long to steep and it’s fresher. -
Reflection QuestionCommunity Learn about Plastic ProductionWhat did you learn about how plastic production impacts humans, animals, communities, and the environment? Which of these impacts specifically affects your community?
Jianna Wankel 7/08/2022 1:15 PMI listened to a podcast about the recycle symbol and how it is so misleading. People think they’re helping but they’re not and the recycle symbol is not even a real thing. No one knows the origin of the symbol really. It shows the type of plastic. It is basically so that companies can produce plastic and the public doesn’t mind because they think it’s recyclable so it’s not that bad. But less than ten percent has actually been recycled.-
Linda Rowe 7/09/2022 4:00 PMThis is so sad, but true. It really bugs me that the triangle is on all the take-out cups. You think it makes the clear plastic ones better than Styrofoam, but really there are so many types of plastic used to make various cups AND nobody really rinses the drink residue out of their disposable cups. So they are TOTALLY NOT recyclable.

Jianna Wankel 7/08/2022 1:03 PMGoing well so far. I don’t always have the opportunity to do every challenge everyday though since I don’t shop or go out to eat every day. -
