This challenge has been incredibly eye opening and has majorly impacted my awareness to plastic within my home. I’m really already began swapping out products for plastic-free, sustainable options, reuse plastics and glass prior to recycling them, and try to minimize buying food products that come in plastic. While not always easy, I’ve come to enjoy seeking out and supporting more waste-free, sustainable companies and products. I also gain joy in sharing my finds with family and friends. I’m grateful for this challenge and the positive impact it has on our planet.

Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

It’s shameful how many single use plastic products I have in the kitchen. I’m going to seek out condiments and other items that come in glass jars instead of plastic. I’m also going to start purchasing cheese and meats from the deli and bring my own glass containers to package them. These small changes would make a significant impact on reducing plastic waste.

Often, single-use and disposable products don't just create more trash - they also contain toxins that are bad for humans. What are some other single-use items that are harmful to humans?

Other single-use items that are harmful are cleaning wipes, as well as dish and laundry pods. I do not purchase these items for that reason.

Do some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?

I had heard that aluminum can be harmful in large amounts, so I have not used aluminum based deodorants for well over a decade. I never really did the research until now to better understand what the effects are. I  was shocked to see the many symptoms that can come from too much exposure such as: anemia, seizures, brain and bone cancers, lung problems, and nervous system problems. I’m grateful I have not used aluminum based deodorants enough to have experienced these symptoms. I hope more awareness of the harmful effects of aluminum deodorant will come to those that do use it.
Thanks to this challenge, I have also swapped my natural deodorant for a brand with plastic free packaging, and I’m in love with the swap! Not only do I feel great about not adding harmful chemicals or aluminum to my body, but I have the added joy of knowing I’m not adding to our plastic problem.

I’m liking it so far! Great  scent and holds up decently but not on the hottest of Sacramento days (not sure any deodorant could, lol)! I especially love that it is a woman owned company that donates 1% of each sale to breast cancer research and survivor support. Great company helping the world be plastic and aluminum free!

I am just wondering what product you found that is natural deodorant in plastic free packaging.  Sounds like something I could check out.

I  am currently watching, “A Plastic Ocean”. It’s utterly heart breaking. I’ve watched relatable documentaries in the past, but so far this is a beautifully organized and visually descriptive film that gets to the seriousness of the toxicity of Plastic that we contribute to our earth everyday. The impact on the land, water, and animals is irreparable but preventable if we all do our part. This film is definitely motivating me to step up my mission to reduce plastics and spread the message to others. I highly recommend this film. It is currently on Netflix for those with a subscription!

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

    Brittoni Ward's avatar
    Brittoni Ward 7/03/2021 10:21 AM
I found out that my plastic consumption is around 64.80kg per year. I was relieved to see that I use around 20kg less than the average American, but that really isn’t anything to begin celebrating. I clearly need to make significant changes to lower my plastic consumption. Completing this task really opened my eyes to how much plastic I use weekly. It’s shocking and awful. My greatest concern is how many food products come packaged in plastic and feel this will be that hardest area to improve. I will definitely do my part to discover ways that I can purchase food without packaging!

    Food Minimize Packaging
With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Brittoni Ward's avatar
    Brittoni Ward 7/02/2021 7:18 PM
I’ve noticed that if products are not already packaged in plastic, you are urged to wrap them in plastic yourself (specifically thinking of produce). Covid has limited our opportunities to bring in our own reusable produce and shopping bags, making it more challenging to avoid. I’m consciously buying unwrapped produce and groceries and basing them at my car using my reusable bags.
