Reflection QuestionFamily Swap the SnacksHow does swapping out prepackaged snacks for fresh fruit or veggies benefit your family?
Gillian Turner 7/30/2021 8:27 AMFruit & vegetables are not only healthier, they can also be cheaper! It's very affordable to get them at the farmer's market and they come with no plastic packaging. -
Reflection QuestionCommunity Sign a PetitionWhat is a plastic-related issue in your state/province?
Gillian Turner 7/28/2021 9:26 AMRight now, an issue in Portland is plastic litter from unhoused camps. During the pandemic, for safety reasons, the city did much less to clean up trash and so it has become a larger issue than previously. -
Reflection QuestionFood Skip the StrawHave you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.
Gillian Turner 7/28/2021 9:25 AMI have noticed that many restaurants in my community offer paper straws at this point, but I don't often see people bringing reusable straws with them. I have also seen places that no longer offer straws at all. For example, Burgerville has paper straws and Barista coffee just gives out their drinks with no lid/straw at all unless you ask for one. -

Reflection QuestionFood Make My OwnHow do you feel about being more involved in the food preparation process? Joyful, overwhelmed, engaged, empowered? What are the benefits of choosing to process or produce your own food instead of buying it pre-processed?
Gillian Turner 7/26/2021 11:16 AMWe tried out making fermented honey garlic: https://www.growforagecookferment.com/fermented-honey-garlic/
It was exciting to prep and unlike many pre-processed foods it has a benefit to the immune system. We used honey that we bought in a glass jar and garlic with no packaging, and the final product is also stored in glass so we didn't create any extra plastic waste. -
Reflection QuestionLifestyle Watch a DocumentaryWhich documentary did you choose to watch? What did you learn?
Gillian Turner 7/23/2021 10:47 AMI watched Kiss the Ground as part of our ACHS watch party and loved learning more about regenerative farming! -

Reflection QuestionCommunity Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutralWhat did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?
Gillian Turner 7/06/2021 8:36 AMI wasn't too surprised that one of my highest categories was groceries. Although I bring my own bags, I have still been buying products that are wrapped in plastic. I plan to work on being more mindful about which products I choose to buy. -
Gillian Turner 7/02/2021 11:57 AMToday I'm listening to a 15-minute podcast about how Oregon can responsibly manage recycling and what needs to change. Very informative! https://www.opb.org/article/2021/06/03/how-can-oregon-responsibly-manage-recycling/
