What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

I wasn't very surprised, but I do feel bad about ordering takeout in plastic. I have definitely been doing this more during COVID. My goal is to work on ordering takeout only from places that use sustainable takeout packaging. I have also been working on replacing lotion and shampoo containers with ones with more sustainable packaging as I run out of the old ones.

Do some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?

Fortunately, I was lucky enough to grow up in a family that never used deodorant with aluminum in it. The deodorant I use today is still aluminum-free, although was sadly packaged in plastic. So, I decided to order a jar of deodorant from ixoqarte.com, a business local to where I grew up: "Ixoq Arte uses homemade recipes to create natural products like natural deodorants and medicinal salves with herbs from her garden.   She believes in self-love & self-preservation as a way to resist cultural and social colonization of people's tradition." It still has a plastic lid, but I figure that it's better than being fully plastic, and at least it supports a local business :)

What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

One big benefit is that it cuts down on plastic waste! I got my toothbrush from green panda and it says that the bristles are made of plant fiber. On their website, they have info on how to dispose of it, which is so important if you don't want it to just end up in the landfill: https://www.greenpanda.eco/faqs These days bamboo toothbrushes are pretty easy to find, easy to use, and they even look way cooler than a plastic toothbrush so I would encourage others to use them :)

Other species can teach us important lessons about ourselves and life in general. What has your cat taught you?

We didn't use sawdust for our cat's litter, but we switched to unscented 100% wheat litter that comes in a paper/cardboard bag and contains no silica dust, sodium bentonite or chemicals of any kind. It has been working great so far! Our cat has taught us that you don't need to buy things to be happy. She doesn't care about any toys that we've bought her, but instead would rather play in a cardboard box, look at birds, or just nap in the sun.

I learned a lot about seed types that I didn't know before, such as the difference between F1 hybrids and heirlooms. I would love to grow my own lettuce and salad materials to be able to stop buying the plastic clamshells that they come in at the store. The only problem is that we have a squirrel problem at our apartment complex & they have been known to dig up anything I plant. Any advice on dealing with squirrels? There are too many to catch and release in a Havahart trap, so it's more about deterring them from entering my garden :)

I'm excited to be taking part in this challenge! One of my goals is to expand my outdoor patio garden, which will be interesting to do with so many squirrels in the area always trying to steal my food.
