Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

    Haley Wilson 7/10/2020 7:03 AM
I wish I had more of an impact. It seems like toothpaste is one of the last things people think about regarding plastic and EVERYONE uses it. I'd like to use my purchasing power to not only make the switch for myself, but maybe investing in that first time switch for those friends and family members I want to influence the most. Once they see how easy it is (and maybe we can find a better/cheaper option) they'll want to continue with the change and look for other ways to reduce!

I like that idea, and to make introduce as a gift for friends or family, like birthday or Christmas gifts!

    Pets Homemade Pet Food/Treats
Does making your own pet food seem like a habit you can keep up in the long term? What else can you do to reduce your use of plastic packaging that can come from taking care of your pet's needs?

    Haley Wilson 7/09/2020 7:26 AM
I don't think making my own pet food is realistic for me right now. I did, however, make homemade sweet potato dog treats!

With the added mindfulness of reducing your packaging, what have you noticed about the amount and type of single use plastics used for packaging when you shop in the grocery store?

    Haley Wilson 7/08/2020 1:19 PM
I have had to pass on some of the foods/drinks I really wanted because they were covered in plastic. Everything is covered in plastic and not much of it is actually recyclable. You can't just go in and get what you want, you sometimes need to settle on other fruits/veggies or bypass the sweets. Good thing we have a great bakery here in Gainesville, FL - Uppercrust - and I can still get cookies and pastries!

What are the economic and personal benefits of switching to bar soap/shampoo/conditioner or refillable bottle options?

    Haley Wilson 7/07/2020 3:54 PM
I have tried the bar shampoo/conditioner, but I have wanted to try the refillable options for a while. I am marking on my calendar when I bought them and note when I will need to refill and am interested to see how much it actually costs comparatively. Personally, I like the look of the aluminum bottles in the shower and am looking forward to being able to refill instead of throwing away. Thanks, Life Unplastic!

Beau and I were craving for someone else to cook for us, but with COVID-19, so many restaurants have reversed to their old plastic/styrofoam ways. I just can't feel good about take out when that's the cost. Thankfully Loosey's downtown uses paperboys and paper togo boxes! We have very little waste and the rest went into the paper recycling bin! It was awesome! Go, Loosey's! Side note: They were extremely COVID safe. Didn't have to go into the restaurant, everyone was wearing masks and social distancing. Felt great!

Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutral
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

    Haley Wilson 7/04/2020 6:30 AM
I found that there are some things that I do really well and there are somethings that I am much less disciplined about. It always surprising how quickly things add up, and with our collective usage how quickly there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish.

    Lifestyle Natural Fibers
What are the benefits (to people, animals, and the environment) of purchasing clothes made with natural fibers?

    Haley Wilson 7/02/2020 5:22 AM
It's not always easy finding companies that support our mission of not only reducing plastic packaging but plastic in our clothes too. Well, if you're in need of shoes, look no further than AllBirds! www.allbirds.com They are extremely comfortable, made with natural materials, and when they arrived at my house there wasn't one piece of plastic with them! I am so impressed and think I found my new favorite shoe company... <3

What did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?

    Haley Wilson 7/01/2020 8:12 AM
This was really enlightening. I did an audit of about a week and a half worth of waste and it helped me identify where I need to make the most changes. While I can definitely reduce the amount of plastic wrapping that goes in the garbage, what surprised me was all the non-compostable food waste. I don't have a garbage di
