The Challenge is nearly done. When I compare to last year I now see that I have already implemented a lot in my life  which  I have not seen. I think that small steps are also steps .  You  have to  start and then it is a domino effect. However, I am not at all satisfied with my meals. Last year it was easy but I also   abstained from a lot of things which was stressful. I only had to cook one meal and it was no problem. Due to Corona I cannot eat at work anymore and have to prepare 2 meals. A lot of things are in plastic. Of course I buy most of the Veggies without but plant Joghurt i.e. is always in plastic and never in a jar. This is not good! I also think that I have not really challenged myself when choosing the tasks. So, still need to work, but I learned a lot. Thanks for this initiative and thanks to our great team!

Hi Jocelyn, Today I have tried the sponge. It is flat when dry but with water you can clean with it. It has 2 different sides. Not so flexibel as the plastic ones, but it works.

Do an inventory of your kitchen to see how many single-use plastics you've used in the past. What are some resuable alternatives to these commonly used products? What would your impact be if you switched all the single-use products from your inventory to reusable?

Since last year's challenge I have been throwing out plastic bowls and containers and changed to glass, metal ones. I admit I had some concerns as these plastic items also go to the waste bin ... However, I also want to throw out chemicals in my home and as the bowls were already very old I assume that there were a lot of chemicals in it. I also start now to use Starchers for freezing items and will not use plastic bags anymore. One step after the other, but it will have an impact.

What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

I've been using them for some weeks now and do not see any disadvantage in comparison to electrical plastic toothbrushes. I like the idea of gifting them to friends and family as someone has already suggested.

Bought some sisal sponges to use them for the washing up. I wanted to get rid of the plastic sponges you usually buy in the supermarket. Has anyone experience with it?

I was gifted some sea sponges to clean with in the past and liked them. I was thinking to buy some natural brushes posted via this site for the harder to scrub away pots and pans. Please send pics of your sisal sponges and share how you find it works for you Claudia. Will make a switch when I finish the last of the sponges I had previously bought prior to this chllenge. Thank you!

My plastic consumption today was frustrating. I was looking at the waste I made today and really was embarressed. Some things were bought before 1 July but also today I went to buy some fresh things like Fish, which you cannot buy with plastic ... especially in Corona times. I have the impression we create more waste due to this virus. Seems that we all still have to learn a lot.

Part of this challenge is educating ourselves on what we can do and where we create plastic waste. Instead of being embarrassed, look at it an educational opportunity and how changes can be made in the future. In other words, it was a day to increase awareness! Keep moving forward, you’re doing great! And you are right, more waste in the form of plastic with reduced recycling and disposable face masks are being generated with current world events.

Do some research on the toxic side affects of aluminum deodorant. After reading the side effects, can you think of instances where you may have experienced the side effects from this form of deodorant?

I personally had no problems, at least I do not remember, but my father has experienced inflammation when using these kind of deodorants, which never occurred when he changed to a product without aluminium.

Have you noticed a shift in your community as more messaging about reusable straws becomes mainstream? Cite some examples.

My employer has changed to reusable straws last year, which was very welcomed.

Currently most of the packaging for toothpaste is plastic. How can you advocate for more alternatives through your purchasing power and influence in community?

I've been using dental tablets for years now. Have talked a lot in the past but for most of the people it is too expensive. When you compare it with a normal toothpaste it costs 3x the price. But you have no fillers in it and my dentist has asked me which "toothpast" I use. She was not aware of it. Shame! In the meantime you can buy it also in drugstores. I am now using a powder, which is also good. The powder is in a glass container, only the cover is in plastic. I talk more about these things, also that it is a good alternative for business people who have to fly a lot - no liquid!

Would like to share this website with you in case you do not know the organization. www.plasticbank.com I find it a good initiative to keep plastic off the ocean and give poor people the chance to earn money for living.
