    Food Buy Unpackaged Produce
Why do you think these produce products started amassing so much plastic packaging? Who is the plastic packaging really serving -- the consumer, the producer, or someone else?

I think the produce started amassing so much plastic packaging for the novelty and convenience. The packaging, in my opinion, serves the producer because at the end of the day, they produce the plastic and get paid for it. They're not invested in what happens to it once it gets in the hands of consumers. I see 3lbs of apples in plastic bags at the grocery store and it's just for convenience. You pick up a bag, put it in your cart and continue shopping. Doing that completely eliminates having to weigh the apples to get 3 lbs. I would very much prefer to weigh the apples and put them in my own bag.

What concerns you the most about how we are affecting the planet? Consider both local and global actions.

What concerns me is the environmental injustice that is happening as a result of how humans, as a whole, are affecting the planet. Communities of color are affected by all the environmental effects happening, such as global warming. Some live in areas where sea levels are rising and their homes are being flooded. We see weather patterns that are getting more extreme, and these communities cannot afford to lose their homes. Some don't have access to clean water and the only way to get it is to buy bottled water, which adds to the plastic pollution problem. But how are they to buy a reusable water bottle when they cannot fill up that bottle with clean water? Do they even have the money to purchase a reusable water bottle? I've often heard that adopting a plant based diet will help fight global warming, but a plant based diet is also expensive and not everyone can afford it. It's important to keep these things in mind when interacting with others regarding the protection of our planet. We cannot try to make the planet healthier without first addressing the injustices that communities of color face.

    Personal Care Practice Sustainable Fashion
How can you express your personality, creativity, and values in ways that don't require fast fashion or buying more clothes and accessories?

At the most basic level, I want to learn to patch clothing in a way that I will actually continue to wear the clothing... i.e. I have a pair of jeans that I love but I ripped a hole in a pretty essential part of the jeans.  Maybe learning how to put a cute patch on, or embroider, or ANYTHING that will allow me to continue wearing this article of clothing would be awesome!  I was also thinking about how I would really like to reuse the clothing I may have purchased in the past that no longer serves a purpose to me in terms of 'fashion' by turning it into something I will use a LOT.  I've been passing 3 quilts that hang on the walls of my workplace everyday and I thought, "What a great way to use/reuse fabric!"  Quilting has always enticed me and how fun would it be to quilt using my old sports or club team shirts from highschool!  Some people I know highlight their experiences by quilting their organization's t-shirts and making it into a memory blanket.  I should hope that I can continue to reuse clothes and other items that may not serve a purpose to me now, or donate it in a condition that will actually allow it to be reused.

I am most concerned about the amount of people on this planet contributing to the issue and the lack of interest corporations have in reducing their plastic production as it effects their bottom line.  In our own communities (being from California) I see the lack of interest in properly disposing of our waste--drive down any major highway and its littered with garbage.  On a global scale, this is obviously a negative practice more impactful in underserved communities who don't have the resources to deal with the waste they're encountering (that may not even necessarily be from their own citizens!).  I am concerned there is not enough momentum in the plastic-free movement to reduce our impact quickly enough.

I can show you how to patch your jeans, and give you a few ideas on how to reuse old clothes as well with some simple sewing...no sewing machine required.

    Lifestyle Complete a Waste Audit
What did you learn about the waste you create? Where can you reduce the most?

I did not have a chance to do a waste audit, but researching the process of a waste audit was very intriguing!  If I were to estimate my actual waste footprint over a multi-day span based on what I'd observed of myself this past week, 25% would be food waste (banana peels, pits, etc.), 25% would be paper/cardboard, and 50% would be plastics.  However, the pounds of waste I produce over that period may add up to a pound or two, maximum.  I think a waste audit is an interesting concept for a large-scale group, like a business.  I can also continue to try reducing my plastic use, though I already reuse my plastic containers from products like hummus and yogurt for take-out or packed lunch containers.

I had turned on a documentary during a slow period at a previous workplace and we learned about plastic pollution in the oceans and some of the main thoroughfares for how plastic enters these bodies of water.

What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

I found out that my footprint is lower than the average American, but there's plenty of room for improvement. Was not surprised that groceries is one of my largest contributors to my plastic footprint, as well as home and living. I do my best to avoid packaging especially with produce but there's almost always something I take home in plastic. A good practice with home and living is to find a plastic-free alternative as you run out of an item in a plastic container. While visiting Homer I found a homemade soap shop with some of the most amazing scents, and the best part is no plastic packaging!

I think what concerns me most is how blasé we can be about how our actions affect the planet. I'm guilty of this too--often choosing convenience over long-term care. PFJ is a great reminder that each day I can make a decision that's better for the planet, and while I'm not perfect I will continue considering the planet when making choices well beyond this month.

A lot of it has to do with it being such a wide-spanned, complicated issue too, but all the more reason to focus on your local area first.

Hey eveyone, I stopped by the Essential yesterday for a soda at their fountain (yes, I really did  :)  )  and I learned they are once again allowing you to use your own cup for a beverage.....no longer need to use their cups and of course, pass up the straw and the plastic lid!
