Thank you all for your participation throughout this challenge! I hope everyone learned something new and most of all, I hope you carry your new habits forward :)
  • Reflection Question
Food Advocate For More Food Packaging Options
Single use plastics have become normalized in our society to the point that most people don't see them as a problem. What would you say to a friend, colleague, or family member who may not understand why these disposables are an issue?

    Sophia Paul 7/28/2020 8:57 AM
I've run into this so much more recently as many places are prohibiting reusable bags due to COVID. I've talked with the managers of my local farmers to advocate for non-plastic options if they are unable to allow reusable bags and highlighted that package free, fresher food is many people's primary reason for shopping at these markets.
  • Reflection Question
    Lifestyle Homemade Cleaners
What did you learn by making your own cleaning products? What is the biggest difference in making vs buying?

    Sophia Paul 7/28/2020 8:53 AM
I made some cleaner using water, vinegar, and leftover lemon peel from cooking. It smells great, cleans well, and is extending the life of an old plastic spray bottle that was already in my home! Going forward I plan to continue using the bottles I already have and making my own or using water soluble tabs.

This!!!!! A thousand times, this!!! I think at-home cleaning products are so wonderful. Now everyone in my life questions why I seem to buy apocalyptic amounts of vinegar and baking soda, haha. My favorite scent creation thus far = bergamot, tangerine with a little vanilla!

  • Reflection Question
    Food Plant a Garden
Besides having access to fresh herbs and vegetables, what benefits will you see from growing your own garden?

    Sophia Paul 7/20/2020 2:43 PM
I planted my garden at the beginning of this challenge, and watching it grow is bringing me so much joy! I'm loving the fresh food already and can't wait to watch my pumpkins grow in the upcoming months.
  • Reflection Question
Community Estimate My Plastic Consumption and Go #PlasticNeutral
What did you find out about your plastic consumption by using the calculator? What did or didn't surprise you?

    Caroline Flaesgarten 7/07/2020 5:40 PM
I found out that each year I contribute 162 pounds of plastic in the landfill. Although, I use reusable bags, water bottles, and recycle, this is a huge number. A majority of my plastic waste is in Food Groceries and Home and Living. My plan to reduce this is to try my best to purchase items in the store that aren't wrapped in plastic.

    • Sophia Paul 7/17/2020 12:19 PM
Thanks for sharing! It can be so difficult to get around the plastic in our lives, especially with new COVID protocols. Even places that are typically lower waste (farmer's markets), more and more plastic seems to be appearing.
  • Reflection Question
    Community Keep My Community Clean
How does the act of picking up litter connect you more to your community?

    Caroline Flaesgarten 7/07/2020 5:25 PM
I just moved to a new neighborhood in April (South Loop) and we're by a few restaurants. My boyfriend and I have noticed how much garbage is on the street and sidewalk. I take safety precautions while I pick up any garbage (mask and rubber gloves).  I want to do my part to make my new neighborhood look nice!

  • Reflection Question
Community Learn About Environmental and Climate Justice
What have you learned about the interconnection of the issues we face? How can we begin to improve these situations as individuals?

    Annika Kapani 7/07/2020 9:26 AM
its always important to stay informed and know what impacts your actions physically make

This was really eye opening! Though I consume less plastic than many Americans, I’ve (guiltily) watched the plastic pile up from groceries and too many IKEA trips while renovating a home and will be making some more changes.

I completely relate. Doing home renovations and remaining conscious of overconsumption and plastic pollution is EXTREMELY hard to do. I slowly moved away from (and am still working on this) the "fast" solutions to sticking with salvage shops and sustainable options. Which, in the end turn out with more character :)

I just moved to a new part of town and over the holiday weekend, I was able to check out the Farmer's Market. I'll be sure to purchase some of my grocery items from the Farmer's Market this week to help me avoid plastic packaging.
