    Community Research Local Waste Sites
In what neighborhoods or areas of your region are landfills or other waste sites located? Which communities are most affected by these locations?

In our area - collection sites tend to be outside of the metro area, at nearby small towns or suburbs.  This can make it difficult for urban dwellers to responsibly recycle and dispose of hazardous waste.  In Iowa, we have had a 5cent charge for cans and bottles but our grocery chains no longer want to be collection sites and I can foresee this discouraging people from recycling.

    Food Give Up Gum
Why do you chew gum? What habits could replace and meet your reasons for chewing gum?

I chew gum as a way to control cravings between meals or if skipping a meal during a hectic work day but had no idea that gum base contained environmentally-harmful plastics.

This has given me a chance to seek out chicle based alternatives!

    Personal Care Brusha Brusha Brusha
What are the benefits of switching to bamboo toothbrushes? How would you implore others in your community to make this switch as well?

Until I did some quick research, I hadn't considered the impact of using plastic brushes.  Bamboo is cool and more sustainable and it also feels really good in your hand so I am probably brushing longer.  My dentist would approve!

Shopping garage sales for fun jewelry/purses and accessories can repurpose/ update our "look" and reduce the amount of items we take to Goodwill and other collection sites.

Though our household has become smaller with children grown - we should go back to purchasing items in larger, refillable containers again to reduce plastic containers from laundry, cleaning supplies and gardening supplies.

I am noticing that more local restaurants are offering paper straws vs plastic.  I also see more people using reusable straws.  Such a small step that adds up to a BIG difference!

    Community Say No to Styrofoam
How might styrofoam be an environmental justice and/or environmental racism issue in your community?

Styrofoam contains Styrene, which leaches into foods and drinks served in Styrofoam.  Why does this matter?  The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), National Toxicology Program (NTP) lists styrene as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has determined that styrene is a possible human carcinogen.
